It's the whole concept of the Berlin Philarmony, having the audience seated around the stage, with the sound actually rising from the core and then downing on the audience. I find the Sharoun design completely astonishing, and I'm surprised this idea hasn't been repeated a lot since then as far as I know. Thanks JN!
