ouch! thats brutal! Looks dated already, and sits so uncomfortably next to that poor little existing building. The interiors are equally unforgiving in their clumsy, ineligant appearance too. For all its complexities it produces some very uninspiring natural lighting in the interior spaces shown.

well, that is precisely the issue in Ohio. we have some great cities, Toledo, Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati with diversity, strong cultural histories etc. etc., and firms would kill to get a large museum project. no experience, small oeuvre, blah, blah, blah, yet clients are unwilling to change that. any of the contemporary buildings of any significance here are from well...there. i think i have even heard talk of a Calatrava project. Too often we call upon the stars of the profession to seek out the silver bullet for our dying cities or lackluster communities. enough said, but thanks Mr. Prix anyway.

1) Though the exterior and the lobby got good enough marks, the NYTimes' Nicolai Ouroussoff totally panned the galleries and the actual artviewing experience of the Akron Museum.Your boredom may not be misplaced.

2) Assuming you don't mean Cleveland looked to Vienna. MVRDV [NL] is doing the CIA and Foreign Office Architects [UK] is doing the MCA. It would indeed be nice if local architects could have a chance at winning such commissions, but then, wouldn't they have to have a track record of remotely interesting work to be considered? A sixth office park doesn't count.

i visited on opening day with a bit of excitement. although the building has a quite striking exterior, it is difficult to see within the city unless your right next to it... good or bad, i haven't decided yet. aside from the entry, the interior spaces are quite conventional in terms of look, volume, lighting etc. the floors are covered with raised electrical outlets that are very eager to beg for your attention, or trip those who ignore them. for a building that is so dramatic, i am surprised as to how quickly it becomes sort of boring. i am trying to like it, but it is difficult. also a bit sad that akron had to reach out to vienna for a progressive design (same story with the cleveland museum).
