The sculpture is designed to remind people of their summer holidays during the dark Swedish winters.

Here's some more information from Bernstrand:

Stranden (the beach) is a new permanent outdoor seating group placed next to "Skatteskrapan" on the south island in the center of Stockholm. The sculpture measures 140 square meters with seats for 50 people. The park opened in May 2008.

All furniture and umbrellas are made in solid metal so the park can be open and used all year around. A huge lamp will light up the park at night and during the dark winter Stranden will remind the deep frozen Swedes of summer, holiday and lazy days at the beach.
