Designer Thomas Bernstrand has created an artificial beach in Stockholm, Sweden, consisting of metal beach chairs and umbrellas.

The sculpture is designed to remind people of their summer holidays during the dark Swedish winters.

Here’s some more information from Bernstrand:

Stranden (the beach) is a new permanent outdoor seating group placed next to “Skatteskrapan” on the south island in the center of Stockholm. The sculpture measures 140 square meters with seats for 50 people. The park opened in May 2008.

All furniture and umbrellas are made in solid metal so the park can be open and used all year around. A huge lamp will light up the park at night and during the dark winter Stranden will remind the deep frozen Swedes of summer, holiday and lazy days at the beach.

looks like a nice comfy park, but I’m not sure it constitutes a “sculpture.”

Perhaps this ‘installation’ should be presented and photographed during winter, to emphasis the idea behind this art. It’s a nice idea but to open the park in May seems to deflate the artist’s original intention.

Ah. Reminds me of hazy sunny childhood days, making our lazy way to the beach with buckets and spades and a picnic and a Huge Lamp of course, we never forgot that.

So “Paris plage*” is a sculpture/Art installation too ?

    * A temporary beach set up on the Seine every summer with sand, deck chairs, Parasols etc…

hey i leave my balcony chairs out all year. i’m an artist! yay, i didn’t realise! i live in stockholm and i promise you that this is not something most stockholmers would consider art. art direction, maybe. but art? it’s a bunch of chairs and umbrellas, used as chairs and umbrellas! also, who dreams of a bunch of beach chairs packed like sardines? i would love a scuplture that brought a summer breeze in the winter or some warmth or even green grass. cause it sure gets cold here (and dark). but metal chairs (cold in the winter, hot in the summer)? why?

I see (discounting opinion) something that has no real message, is not unique, would not require applied effort and is only slightly out of the ordinary. Nevertheless I do really like this, many plain areas would benefit from a cheap, easy distraction such as this. (reading over my comment, I realise it seems sarcastic – it isn’t intended to be)
