My father made some calculations and he found that CFL was cheaper in long run(i know it is not the same but it is related) than the bulb, unless of course the green bandwagon makes CFL cheaper due to Industries get a nice Government check that came from all our taxes. Anyway kudos to not get into green bandwagon, if there is one thing to say is the lack of reliable information (=non-politicized) in media about that kind of issues. The unshaded bulbs would glare in your eyes as much as they illuminate the page (and 30 watts isn't enough light for comfortable reading).
