Sam – sorry to say, but the Bahamas ads and their ubiquity may have inadvertently and quite unfortunately tainted your appreciation for this stylistic shape and it’s applications in deign. These icon’s have been prevalent in graphic design circles for quite some time, they began to gain in popularity with designers again in the late 90’s with the likes of Eric Natzke (natzke.com – one of the fathers of AS flash animation), Nando Costa (hungryfordesign.com), the Mike’s from WeWorkForThem.com and a few other’s on the frontiers of digital media. Sadly, some big dollar agency must have gotten a glimpse of what was cool and adopted the style (quite nicely) for a nationwide campaign attempting to brand the Bahamian Islands. This effort may have finally made the vocabulary seem quite trite and hackneyed, perhaps you’re right it’s no longer as refreshing and fresh as it once was. Then again maybe the designers of this piece have not been exposed to the ads of mass appeal, they’d have probably chosen other geometry. Otherwise, I’d agree with Jed. On another note – The new Brazilian super star making waves now or rather for a few years ongoing now is adhemas.com of Havaianas fame and another is the Brit over at non-format.com.
