I went to this building today, from the far end of the street; which really is throbbing. The sidewalks are narrow, and you feel like part of the action inside of shops you pass. It's crowded with trams and people. Then, the broken asphalt goes away, and you're on the stone that also covers the building, the benches, and the drains, with lights recessed in it. The “finger” the size of the space in front of Hospital Maggiore has only size in plan in common – at Maggiore you have a lovely park with height in the trees, here it's flat and sealed in stone.

It's a lot of stone veneer, not so gracefully handled at corners. The overhangs were protecting me from the rain, but were too far away to feel sheltering. The room to the far left of the model has artwork in it now that says “contemporary sleek boutique” it was empty, then people started leaving the theater and filled this room and surprisingly, when it filled up with people, it was colder! (There was a big event with dignitaries, etc., and a lot of people dressed in black.) Overall, this is a misplaced portion of airy airport terminal, with blinders on – it's most open views are of itself. It misses the rhythm and scale of the street in activity, detail and life, and turns a lot of blank faces onto the neighbors.

@findjohnmichael,

I appreciate its stone, but its monolithic treatment of the concrete and stone *remind* me of the scant disregard for human occupation as demosntrated by my old university. And please don't think I'm advocating self-indulgent shiny baubles, simply human scale and respect of matierals.

This is sharp and confidently expressed, not brutal. Thank goodness they didn't feel the need to wrap it in something or decorate it with shiny baubles. Moreover, kneejerk reactions based on a handful of photos are missing the point, the reason why the project won is the superb resolution of complex spatial relationships. The interiors look stark in the photos of course but this is a university that hasn't opened for business yet, it'll be softened with occupation.

The massing is quite clever...but the materials and color emphasize the building's too-large scale.

They must like Brulatistic architecture in Italy. On the positive note, how well-done is the model!!
