The structure was build with SCC - Self Compacting Concrete in situ. Inside of the twist is a steel framework - surroundet by reinforcement.
The boarding (if this is the right word) was made of claroporon (similar to styrofoam) cubes. The shape was cut with CNC an the cubes (2 * 2 *2 meter) where stacked like a magic cube. The interior was then filled with pumped in SCC. This was done in 3 sections, each about 6 meters high. The surface was not quite as beautifule after stripping, it needed some cosmetic work to looke like it does now.

Designed in 1998-03 and still it remains good looking and extremely 'modern'.
Its a some seriously slick design from UNstudio well done.

i find the staircase rather kitsch. the bulge effect is interesting, but why?

I am less interested in the stair, although a fine detail, than I am the use of reinforced concrete in a manner that showcases it's structural role as a both a compressive and tensile material, as well as its maleability as a material. Obviously structural in this instance, the concrete curves also inform the viewer of the material's originally fluid state, much more so than had the space been supported by simple vertical concrete columns, of which I see none. I like structural rationalism, and in this case, find an interesting manifestation of it. Also, I have no idea what happens in the actual performance space, merely in the circulation space showcased here. What about the other 2/3 of the volume?

Spectacular building, in particular the interior. I just don't think you could design something like this without a computer. Great use of this evolving tool. Much credit to the architects and maybe more to the builders. Interesting read too. Understanding thought processes without overdosing on BS is a good thing. Thanks

Having been a student of architecture for four years now and almost ready to graduate with my undergrad degree at a school that is primarily based on modernism. I myself being a one who questions all work at all times in order to progress design in all areas of the field of design. The more criticisms I receive the more I realize that most of it is purely subjective. I personally find this piece of work beautiful and very unpragmatic and the more that the better. I think most people are just scared of the future of architecture because they will not have a place in it when design has turned it's cheek to pragmatism. It all has it's place whether for to be compared to or to stand on it's own as one of a kind. Just my two sense. Anyways beautiful piece of work. Wish there was more of it in the world.
