nice design, but how in the hell is this thing going to be transported, unfolded, setup, torn down…..That will be one heck of a process and I’d love to see it first hand.

The competition is still ongoing, so its actually quite odd the amount of press coverage this shortlisted entry is getting. Would have thought the RIBA would temper the coverage a little so as to avoid any undue influence on the result.

@Ivar – “The structure is really not doing anything”, you mean other than holding it up? The use of air as the compressive material in the structure (as opposed to steel, concrete, or most other materials) requires more structure, more tubes, to lend stiffness and stability to the structure. I have no doubt that if it were constructed of concrete (mobility aside) it would involve far fewer diamond elements, and would actually be likely to use a completely different structure, and be a completely different building.

who, if anyone, won this one? the riba website is tight lipped. the five shortlisted are a pallid bunch (www.archicentral.com/five-schemes-short-listed-for-renaissance-pavilion-competition-10365/). the diamond pavilion stands out, albeit for cracking a smallish nut with a techno sledgehammer.

Very interesting structure. The use of solar and wind energy to keep the structure inflated and lit makes it an interesting example of the use of “sustainable” technology.
