This project is much better in person when you can touch the building. The lines between new and old plaster. The soot-stained stone. The rough and smooth concrete.

What is it with some architects and their banal quest for the new, the progressive, and the never been done before? I thought as a discipline we were dealing with much more timeless issues than that. This work is in essence a conservation project and the way in which it deals with the delicate issue of conservation is (if it must be labelled so) progressive. Why hide away all of the scars of history which tell the full story or beat the old building into submission with some dazzling new architectural centre piece. In my opinion it is a question of appropriateness, and what is appropriate needs to be asked every time. To always start from the notion that a project needs to be new and radical is tedious and arrogant in the way it disrespects the lessons of history. I think what Chipperfield has done here is brave, incredibly time consuming, selfless and above all appropriate.

A review of the project can be found at:

why should it be interesting or progressive_? it is not necessary, because beautiful is far enough, it is much more than interesting. \beautiful that remains beautiful. Besides, it has sense. I like this mature, cool architecture very much.

I don't know in which period we live, but is this renewing? Is this interesting progressive? Even when it's not progressive is this interesting? Can we go on like this? This creation of architecture is older then that from Karl Friedrich Schinkel itself!
