The possibility of rising sea levels has been acknowledged by the Dutch already about 30 years ago, and all necessary measures are now in place. One third of the country lies under sea level, to take the bet is just not an option.

Since a great flood in 1953 there have been continuous improvements, formerly through the Delta Works, and the currently through the High Water Security Program (hoogwaterbeschermingsprogramma).

There are also specially elected governmental bodies that are exclusively dedicated to Water Management (Hoogheemraadschap)

MVRDV seems afraid for the complex context of Almere itself. It's easy to start all over again on the edge (in the water) of the city. Why not looking for a more urban solution within the existing stucture. Construct a city.

I totally agree with the first comment of Nia, this project makes absolutely no sense: I know it´s very fancy to build on the water, especially when you´re in holland ;), but it would be way more interesting to try to make Almere a real city and not a sort of continuous peripherical condition. To extend this peripherical condition in the sea is a waste of money and open space...

eventhough its in a lake,
they shouldn't reduce those
free surfaces of water, since
this is one of the few qualities
of dutch landscapes.
more density, please!

Regarding rising sea levels, Almere doesn't lie by the sea. It is actually on an already artificial island that is called Flevoland inside a lake called IJsselmeer that used to be a sea.

However, I agree completely with Nia in that this will only further cut up Almere instead of making it a real city. Even The Hague can be seen as urban sprawl, due to the fact it started out as multiple small towns between dunes.

Almere is protected by the "afsluitdijk", hence the word Lake in the text (which is different from the words Sea or Ocean)

sorry to mention this, but the Ijsselmeer is already protected from north sea by a dike, making it a lake and not a fluctuating body of water. That’s called geography.

Now that we have learned that the estimates of sea level rise were far to optimistic, I am shocked that I see no mention of whether they have taken into account sea level rise. Sounds like this may be a 'temporary' extension of the city, much like some of the similar sprawl in Dubai.
