That's a great point and I don't think it would have really occurred to me. I guess that's just a trade off for "good design"... it's a very good point, and something to think about for the future. As for the solar gain and cross ventilation issues, this is becoming redundant for the architectural lingo; just as Prozac, cholesterol level or liposuction - they're merely catch-words to go along with the trend. I'd suggest my fellow American architects to over-use them as never before, so that in the following season they can explore newer (and more exotic) topics on green architecture... Is this a back to back duplex? That would be a bit of a shift for the NO vernacular with so many single and double barrel shotguns, and I don’t know who well the rear public space will play out. It’s good to read that the design addresses solar gain, cross and vertical ventilation, etc. But NO’s heat and humidity is particularly oppressive for much of the year, and air-conditioning large amounts of vertical space is even less sustainable for those who cannot afford high bills. So I wonder out loud how well the actual situation will match the theory under such challenges. I wish there were plans. Is this a back to back duplex?
