I think the concept arises (or a rip-off) from the video game 'World of Goo' or even 'soda zoo', where the stability of the self organized structure is provided by the basic triangular modules created with nodes and bars.

I think the customization/automation may imply that, (in 2050), you can simply map the object (vase, bowl, voodoo doll) in virtual space with nodes, then the computer would be able to generate the connections between nodes to realize the desired spatial occupation into free standing structures. I don't know how it is gonna be materialized it, maybe 3D printer for lego pieces, or they will solely exist in virtual world, but this idea is by no means original.

Search 'World of Goo' in youtube to see what I mean.

Nanobots as tableware...interesting concept.

I thought they were only single function. Adapt INTO something but not mutate entirely? But I haven't been reading my sci-fi lately.

this is funny. i am probably wrong but in the year 2050 i think we will come to the conclusion that honestly if you have to put fruit somewhere, it can easily just sit on a table. no fruit bowl. maybe a cloth underneath? probably.
