By the time I went through about half of the many photos showing the project during and after construction, during the day and at night, and in different seasons, I realized the architecture was right there to answer my question. WHY this project?

In my understanding, Ban’s work was chosen because it represents exactly what modern art stands for: Challenge. Challenge what is taken for granted and show there are a myriad of different ways to express beauty other than what we’ve long seen in the mainstream, and in this particular case the challenge being part of a bigger challenge of redefining the area and put it in the broader picture of Lorraine which incidentally lies at the center of EU., close to Belgium and Germany.
