Makerbot seems to be thriving in this space. I was just checking their website and see they have scores of open positions that they are actively hiring for. In case anyone is curious they are based out of Brooklyn, NY.

All 3D printers do is print the shape you send to it. There is no engineering involved. You cannot take existing designs of things, measure it and print it. It's not that simple. Products go through hundreds if not thousands of hours of design and testing. The results are even independently validated by safety organisations such as UL or ETL.

Someone somewhere will buy a home printer, make a part, bolt it to a ladder or something and it will break. We will see what happens after that event occurs.

Is the plastic this produces recyclable? Now we'll be printing plastic instead of paper.

I'm pretty sure 3D printing will meet its doom, or be very closely monitored in terms of what is going to be printed out. This industry is just beginning to develop a low-cost market and someone already printed out a gun. There's nothing wrong with that part, except such production capabilities may fall into the wrong hands (governmental style thinking).
