Design education was high on the agenda, with incoming D&AD president Neville Brody calling plans to remove creative subjects from the UK curriculum “short-sighted insanity” and the author of a new book on the Ulm School of Design claiming that social responsibility has been forgotten by today's design schools.

Dezeen Book of Ideas: Pewter Stool by Max Lamb

Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs has been selecting his favourite extracts from Dezeen Book of Ideas each day this week, including a pewter stool cast in sand on the beach (above), a homemade toaster and an extension to the Eiffel Tower.
