I don't know what a library's for, nowadays. This project comes, surely, from old politicians wanting to spend money.

Plans are here: <a href="http://www.nypl.org/clp/floor-plans" rel="nofollow">http://www.nypl.org/clp/floor-plans</a>.

It's absolutely not as flashy as Foster's usual - but as a New Yorker who uses that library all the time, I can tell you he didn't have much room to manoeuvre. So much of that building is so iconic, he really had a small section of it in which to squeeze a big functioning modern lending library. The floor plans tell the story. He probably did as well as anyone could have. From a functional standpoint, it'll be nice to have the central lending library back in the iconic old building, rather than the horrible building across the street where it lives now.

Eye-watery architecture. Lessons to become a super-star-architect:

Lesson 1) use always sunny, bright colored super-populated renderings - easiest if you order then at the same rendering company in China like anyone else.

Lesson 2) be as evasive and general as possible in order to re-create a sense of expectancy from the public. This will help you hide the missing concept/design while creating an aura of mystery. Here, the "Swiss hermit" can always give master classes.

We can all learn from Sir Norman Foster, he has been able to understand the surrounding context in his design responses as well as the connections between inside and outdoor space. The internal layout of the public buildings he has designed demonstrate his appreciation of environmental elements, how people use buildings and legibility and movement. Melbourne would be a richer city if Sir Norman practiced here!
