There's definitely a depreciation in knowledge of architectural history and theory throughout the board. Next to the works in Brasilia, Chandigarh and Bangladesh and Niemeyer's, Le Corbusier's and Kahn's theories on the construction of monuments and identity, this project is vain. It's hard to make a truthful remark on the project because there's no documentation besides the renders. But we shouldn't expect much. This project doesn't even seem to acknowledge the virtues found in traditional Arab architecture.

I'm really concerned with the frivolity of contemporary architecture theory and work. We are losing decades of thought on architecture. History is being forgotten.

Exactly. They are just showing some restraint in their form-making by picking a drum and a cube, but the scaleless enigmatic form principle is still there, with its uniform texture wrapping. As much "fashion icon architecture" and of its time as Zaha.

I thought the plan was perhaps a reference to the ancient plan of Baghdad, which has long since been eroded.

I don't think someone complaining about iconoclastic tripe would design a building on such a whimsical idea.

The RIBA was just the judging panel or part of it as I understand it. Yes assemblage are well-deserved winners in my opinion, purely for urban grain of thought, but they are small fish in an aquarium of sharks unfortunately and have made some mistakes in not being able to deal with the right people in power. Iraq is still in the top ten most corrupt countries in the world and out of a 1 billion dollar contract there has to be some "management fees" here and there!
