Skýli mountain shelter is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions

This tent-like steel and cross-laminated timber cabin, designed by Utopia Arkitekter as a retreat for for mountain trekkers, was a big hit with Dezeen's followers, obtaining over 38,000 likes.

Titled Skýli, which translates to "shelter" in Icelandic, the proposed structure would house up to 15 mountaineers with space to store hiking gear and cook food.

Studio Libeskind completes Canada's first Holocaust monument in Ottawa

An image of Studio Libeskind's finished National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa is the most liked post on Dezeen's Instagram account from the past 12 months.

The project, which was liked by over 38,600 users, is Canada's first monument to honour Holocaust victims. It is made up of tall concrete walls that are laid out to appear like a warped version of the Star of David.

MVRDV completes library shaped like a giant eye in Chinese city Tianjin

MVRDV's recently completed eye-shaped five-storey library in Tianjin, China was a somewhat controversial project, due to the placement of fake books in parts of the space. But that didn't prevent Ossip van Duivenbode's photograph from being extremely well received on Instagram.

Sou Fujimoto designs hybrid bookshelf and chair for Alias

Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto's pared-back Bookchair, which fits into a cut-out section of its accompanying bookshelf, is the only design-related post to make our top 10.

The image received 205 comments, including one stating: "Minimalism usually doesn't look this good."

Foster and Heatherwick complete Shanghai theatre with curtain-like facade

The only video to make it into our top 10 list for the year is this timelapse of a new arts and culture centre in Shanghai by Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio.

Instagrammers were mesmerised by the building's ever-changing facade, which the architects described as "a moving veil."

Image of swimming pool with vaulted ceiling named best architecture photograph of 2017

Seeing as this photograph by Terrence Zhang was named best architecture photograph of 2017, it makes sense that the post was one of the most popular on Dezeen's Instagram this year.

The near symmetrical image, which shows light flooding into a swimming pool with a vaulted ceiling, racked up over 33,000 likes, despite only being uploaded in late November.

Jean Nouvel's completed Louvre Abu Dhabi is spanned by a huge geometric-patterned dome

One of the first official images of Jean Nouvel's highly anticipated Louvre Abu Dhabi, by photographer Roland Halbe, was garnered with praise on Instagram. Followers admired the geometric ceiling on the underside of the new art museum's 180-metre domed roof.

Vibrant yellow kitchen brightens basement of north London home

The only interior to feature in this year's architecture-dominated list was a bright yellow kitchen installed into the basement of a north London duplex flat by studio Russian for Fish.

The vibrant image was immensely popular with our followers, gaining over 34,000 likes within just a week of it being posted.

Steven Holl's arts complex for Princeton surrounds courtyard reflecting pool

This image of New York firm Steven Holl Architects' recently completed multi-building arts complex for Princeton University completes the top 10.

The Lewis Center for the Arts is made up of three buildings, containing the prestigious school's dance, music and theatre departments.
