Graduate designer Charlotte Kingsnorth has designed a chair made from a single sheet of folded felt.

Called Felt Up, the chair is made of 16mm thick industrial felt on a steel frame.

Kingsnorth also designed the At One chair in our previous story. Both were exhibited at New Designers in London last month.

Graduate designer Daniel Rawlings has created a series of vases by heat-shrinking plastic tubing around broken crockery.

Rawlings completed the project while studying at Kingston University and exhibited it at graduate show New Designers in London last month.

Heat shrink series, a range of products utilising heat-shrink tubing (heat sensitive plastic that when in contact with a temperature above 150 degrees will shrink in size). A variety of household vessels comprising of reclaimed crockery brought back to life with heat-shrink. The heat-shrink shrouds existing vessels to exaggerate and extend their current forms whilst also reviving a lost functionality.

New Designers 09: Kingston University graduate Yu-Hun Kim presented a range of laminated-felt stools at New Designers in London earlier this month.

Layers of industrial, wool felt are laminated either side of the plywood core.

‘EWE’ is a charaterised stool, inspired by the contrasting textural feature of soft and hard felt. It is playful, warm, cozy and natural.

Industrial felt, made form soft wool fiber, can be cut to precise sizes and thicknesses.

By cutting the laminated felt to a clean edge the stool has the appearance of solid object, however it still retains the felts softness like fur.

New Designers 09: Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication graduate Harry Hasson exhibited furniture held together using ratchet straps in tension at graduate show New Designers in London earlier this month.

Hasson designed the range to be assembled and dismantled quickly for people who move house frequently.

All of the furniture is made of coated plywood and is assembled without nails, glue, screws, or other fixings.

Ratchet Furniture

In a culture where young people are regularly moving homes, knock down furniture has become very popular and very cheap.

Sometimes cheap enough that people will often prefer to buy new products than have to disassemble their current ones to be re-built elsewhere.

I wanted to create a collection that is easy to assemble and disassemble, but will be robust and look good too.

All of the pieces in the collection are made solely of phenol-faced plywood held together with ratchet straps; no glue, no screws, just the tension of the ratchet on the wood.

It is a system that also makes use of the items around the home that are seldom used, so they become more functional while being stored.

New designers 09: graduate designer Charlotte Kingsnorth presented a sofa inspired by obesity at New Designers in London earlier this month.

The bulging, pink velvet upholstery engulfs its timber frame and is wrapped in latex sheeting.

"At One is a sofa which has been devoured by its obese occupier," says Kingsnorth. "It tells a story of a relationship between a person and their sofa and the evolution of their bond through time spent sitting together."

She designed the seat while studying at Bucks New University in the UK and was awarded a yellow pencil in the D&AD Student Awards 2008 for an early model, produced in response to the brief to design a sofa for the Vitra Editions range.
