Product news: British design brand All Lovely Stuff have created a bird box inside a flowerpot.

The Bird sNest Box by All Lovely Stuff is made by mounting the pot sideways and closing it with a disc of Douglas fir plywood, which has a hole for the bird to get in and a wing nut underneath for a perch.

Designers Ed Ward and Carl Clerkin say the bird box is an ideal home for tree sparrows, great tits and pied flycatchers.

Dezeen filmed a movie with Clerkin earlier this year where he explained the brand's aim of creating functional wooden products with "a little bit of charm about them".

Brooklyn artist Mark Reigelman and San Francisco architect Jenny Chapman have installed a wooden hut in an unusual city location – suspended on the side of a San Francisco hotel like a bird box.

Reigelman claims that the Manifest Destiny! project demonstrates the rights of the urban explorer to find an unoccupied parcel of space in which to make a city home.

Lights visible through the windows give the impression that someone is home.

Electricity to power these lights is generated from a solar panel mounted onto the roof.

The project was constructed in collaboration with engineer Paul Endres and will remain in place until October.

Here's some more words from Reigelman:

Concept

Manifest Destiny! is about our God-given imperative as modern explorers, to seek out parcels of unclaimed territory and boldly establish a new home front in the remaining urban voids of San Francisco.

Overview

Manifest Destiny! is a temporary rustic cabin occupying one of the last remaining unclaimed spaces of downtown San Francisco—above and between other properties. The cabin is affixed to the side of the Hotel des Arts, floating above the restaurant Le Central like an anomalous outgrowth of the contemporary streetscape. Using a 19th-century architectural style and vintage building materials, the structure is both homage to the romantic spirit of the Western Myth and a commentary on the arrogance of Westward expansion. The interior space of the tiny house can be seen day and night through the curtained windows, a lonely beacon in the city’s dense landscape, and an incongruous, haunting vision from below. The installation will remain in place and be slowly transformed by the elements through October 2012.

The cabin is a temporary site specific installation in San Francisco, California. The project was commissioned by Southern Exposure and funded by the Graue Family Foundation.

The project will be on view through October 28th 2012.

Artist

Brooklyn based artist Mark Reigelman in collaboration with architect Jenny Chapman and engineer Paul Endres.

Details

The cabin is approximately 7' wide x 8' deep x 11' tall and sits approximately 40' in the air. The cabin frame is made of welded aluminum while the exterior is finished with 100 year-old reclaimed barn board from Ohio. The rear roof has a 3'x4' solar panel which charges during the day and lights the cabin interior at night. The cabin weights over 1,000 lbs.

Attic is a series of avian abodes recently designed by Studio Chad Wright. At 4'6", 4'10" and 6'0", Attic provides homes of varying levels of status to a variety of birds. Shown here in colors robin's egg, tomato and cloud, Attic features a molded concrete base with a screw-in lawn stake, thus accommodating tiled or lawn-covered landscapes.

Studio Chad Wright is the laboratory, factory and home of Chad Wright, an emerging independent American designer.

After working in several of the top design studios in San Francisco, Chad recently ventured out on his own and founded Studio Chad Wright in 2011, a studio that synthesizes ideas with objects, poeticism with relevance, product with person (or animal), and simplicity with joy.

Here's a little text from the designers:

Natural Indigo

The Inspiration for this series of 19 vases, accessories and lights derives from a phenomenon we have noticed in Paris and London.

In the city center a lot of street furniture, like junction boxes, lamp posts and bollards are covered with a extraordinary stucco-like coating.

We instantly liked the visual and haptic quality and later found out, that it was a special anti-fly-poster-coating to prevent people from putting stickers and posters everywhere.

We did some experiments with the coating and transfered it to design.
