"Crowd represents a departure from my previous stand-alone, unique work and aims to incorporate an element of serial production into my craft practice while satisfying my need to avoid repetition and cloning," Taylor tells us.

Concrete, steel, silver, copper, brass and leather are stacked in different combinations to create the bases, which will be presented next month at the Gallery Montan in Copenhagen next month.

Here is some more information from the designer:

A crowd is gathering in my workshop as I put together a piece that will continue to change with time. Crowd will ultimately incorporate 25-30 individuals and is an organic community of work rather than a static body. Pieces are replaced with new as they leave the group in a process of continual rejuvenation and reinvention. I am using a full material pallet in this project allowing each candlestick to have it's own integrity, enabling it to stand alone or work together with any number of "colleagues".

The information below is written by Petter Eklund:

Walk The Walk

Risk lies at the core of crafts, risk of failure always accompanies new discovery, new beauty. In his forthcoming exhibition “Walk the Walk” at Konsthantverkarna in Stockholm, David Taylor presents a cohesive body of work developed by whim and impulse at the workbench.

By following a notion, working by ear and improvising with unexpected materials without fuss and undue analysis Taylor gives us an insight into the importance of intuitive knowledge, that “gut feeling” which is often more relevant than we can appreciate.

Walk the Walk is a tightly knit family of objects where Taylor’s signature style has been broadened with materials and techniques rarely seen in his work. Concrete meets silver the precise and timeless encounter the modern and impermanent.

This latest edition from Taylor’s workshop is made with a clarity of intention and a conviction in execution, that leaves not doubt the author can not only talk the talk, but knows a thing or two about walking the walk.

Designer David Taylor of Stockholm has created a series of candle holders made from layers of silver, steel and beech for Stockholm craft collective Konsthantverkarna.

Called KHV60, the collection is handmade in an edition of 60 unique, numbered and hallmarked pieces.

Here are some more details from the designer:

David will be presenting 60 new candlesticks at Konsthantverkarna this spring. Made from silver, steel and beech wood, these pieces represent an unparalleled level of mass production in his output. ”My work revolves around unique and short series editions of very restricted numbers the KHV60 Edition is the first time I have made more than 10 of anything”

The KHV60 Edition draws it’s form and choice of materials from two conflicting needs, that of economy and the need to be made by hand. The result is an elegant wooden candlestick with silver details; which create a soothing layered effect that is the visual hook into the work. No two pieces are the same and each piece is fully numbered and hallmarked.

Scandinavia’s oldest and largest crafts collective KONSTHANTVERKARNA celebrates 60 years of operation this year. Founded in 1951 Konsthantverkarnas members, past and present, are a who’s who of contemporary Swedish Crafts and whose work has had a massive influence on the development of what today is recognized as Scandinavian design.

David Taylor has been an active member of Konsthantverkarna since 2009.

Stockholm 2011: designer David Taylor of Stockholm studio Made By: presented these yellow plastic pendant lamps wrapped in paper as part of 20 Designers at Biologiska in Stockholm earlier this month.

Called Point, the lamp shades were suspended in the carved wooden stairwell of the Biologiska museum, where 20 young designers presented work among the museum's dioramas of stuffed animals - see our earlier story for more information.

Taylor also presented a series of candle sticks called Dot, made from brass pine and silver.

Stockholm Design Week took place 7-13 February. See all our coverage of the event here »

Here are some more details from Taylor:

A new candlestick series accompanies a pendant lamp in kicking off an exhibition intensive 2011.

The candlestick edition “Dot” comprises 3 pieces made to work together as a group and to cooperate when used throughout a living space. Brass, pine and silver are integrated into a pleasing disharmony that projects a natural balance and speaks of an earthy, organic calm.

“Point” has been named after the place where the land runs out and the water begins, a pendant lamp that borrows it’s characteristic form from it’s candlestick cousin “Dot”. Plastic, paper and hemp each play a role in the construction and look of this piece. “Point” is a reduction, without removing the sentiment of the work, exuding a warm and welcoming generosity that is its essence.

My workshop and studio is at MADE BY: in the Birkastan district of Stockholm. Here I produce unique applied art objects and short series pieces for private collectors, museums and institutional collections.

Designer David Taylor has created a pair of candlesticks each made of three silver tubes clamped together by a found plastic component to form a tripod.

The longer of the three tubes has been folded to form a vertical holder for the candle. See also: Kink furniture made of folded tubes by Osko+Deichmann.

Taylor has also created an LED lamp using the same clamp, folded tube and a found yellow shade.

The text below is from David Taylor:

My work with complimentary interior objects is made on a very small scale. Often made to order and place specific. This lamp utilises a dimmable LED unit giving a good reading light. The shade is plastic, cannabalized from a fleamarket find, as are the plastic construction elements. The candlesticks are made from silver, the light source here being of course a candle.

Made for a private client as part of a larger interior project.
