<p><strong><a href="http://www.dezeen.com/news/">News:</a></strong> Dutch Design Week has announced its new director as business manager and consultant Martijn Paulen.<span id="more-311056"></span></p>
<p>He will be tasked with providing financial stability to the annual Eindhoven event after an audit last year revealed that <a href="http://www.capitald.nl/" target="_blank">Capital D</a>, its publicly funded parent body, had racked up losses of €945,000.</p>
<p>Paulen, who is director of innovation and learning strategies at <a href="http://www.tiasnimbas.edu/" target="_blank">TiasNimbas Business School</a>, an institution with campuses across the Netherlands, takes over from interim director Bas Braad, who was appointed in December to replace creative director Hans Robertus and business director Robert-Jan Marringa.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.dezeen.com/?p=311056"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-311087" title="Dutch Design Week announces new director Martijn Paulen" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2013/04/dezeen_Dutch-Design-Week-announces-new-director-Martijn-Paulen_2.jpg" alt="Dutch Design Week announces new director Martijn Paulen" width="468" height="456" /></a></p>
<p>Capital D has now obtained additional financing to cover last year's deficit and fund this year's <a href="http://www.ddw.nl/" target="_blank">Dutch Design Week</a> and the Dutch Design Awards, the Eindhoven organisation announced. The new funding will also enable Capital D to continue running two European schemes – digital media project <a href="http://www.capitald.nl/2013/01/kick-off-smartculture/" target="_blank">SmartCulture</a> and design initiative <a href="http://www.proudeurope.eu/" target="_blank">PROUD</a>.</p>
<p>Eindhoven's design community has undergone a turbulent year, with Design Academy Eindhoven last month appointing graphic designer <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/2013/03/18/new-design-academy-eindhoven-creative-director-thomas-widdershoven/">Thomas Widdershoven as its new creative director</a> after a period of turmoil that saw the <a href="http://design.nl/item/anne_mieke_eggenkamp_leaves_design_academy_eindhoven" target="_blank">departure of school's chair Anne Mieke Eggenkamp</a> and the <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/2012/07/20/design-academy-eindhoven-reaches-agreement-with-departed-masters-heads/">resignation and subsequent return of the heads of the three masters courses</a>.</p>
<p>Our coverage of last October's Dutch Design Week included <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/2012/11/01/c-fabriek-production-lines-itay-ohaly-and-thomas-vailly/">a furniture production line set up in an old factory</a> and <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/2012/11/05/cmyk-lamp-by-dennis-parren/">a lamp that can cast coloured shadows</a> – see <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/events/2012/dutch-design-week-2012/">all news from Dutch Design Week 2012</a>.</p>

<p>Photography is by <a href="http://www.post-vanleeuwen.com/" target="_blank">Post &amp; Van Leeuwen</a>.</p>
<p>Here's a few more words from the architects:</p>
<hr />
<p>Studio R-1</p>
<p>A Villa build for a former Philips executive in a green suburb of Eindhoven named ‘Schuttersbosch’ gave designer Hugo de Ruiter the perfect possibility to combine living and working with the existing indoor garage used as studio space.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-164044" title="Studio R-1 by architecten|en|en" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/10/dezeen_Studio-R-1-by-architecten-en-en_8.gif" alt="Studio R-1 by architecten|en|en" width="468" height="367" /></p>
<p>“I don’t want to feel like I am working in my garage” was the main goal of the assignment. The solution was found in adding a mask-shaped volume to the existing garage. By covering this with a perforated corrugated aluminium skin  as mono material for the walls and the roof, a subtle continuation of the clay-roofing of the existing home arises. A  collar of galvanized steel that acts as a terrace boundary highlights the disengagement of existing and new.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-164045" title="Studio R-1 by architecten|en|en" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/10/dezeen_Studio-R-1-by-architecten-en-en_9.gif" alt="Studio R-1 by architecten|en|en" width="468" height="301" /></p>
<p>On the interior the addition provides extra floor-space and height. An abundance of daylight can enter the studio through a south faced strip of glass dividing the addition from the existing roof.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-164046" title="Studio R-1 by architecten|en|en" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/10/dezeen_Studio-R-1-by-architecten-en-en_10.gif" alt="Studio R-1 by architecten|en|en" width="468" height="275" /></p>

<p>Dutch designers <a href="http://www.ons-adres.nl/">Niels van Eijk &amp; Miriam van der Lubbe</a> have refurbished a concert hall in Eindhoven.<span id="more-101845"></span></p>
<p><img title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-0.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.muziekgebouweindhoven.nl/home">Frits Philips Concert Hall</a> features interiors, furniture, staff uniforms and even cutlery by van Eijk and van der Lubbe.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101848" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-2.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Visitors are led from the entrance area into the concert hall by subtle lighting, which move from a high-tech wall over the ceiling.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101849" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-3.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="319" /></p>
<p>A large leaning glass façade at the front of the building provides views into the foyer and the two floors above.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101850" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-4.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="197" /></p>

<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101852" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-5.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The following information is from the designers:</p>
<hr />Concert Hall of the future opens</p>
<p>Sat. 9 Oct. – Festive re-opening of the Frits Philips Concert Hall, Eindhoven</p>
<p>The spectacular metamorphosis of the Frits Philips Concert Hall in Eindhoven is nearing completion.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101853" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-6.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="348" /></p>
<p>The renowned designer duo Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe got together with Philips Ambient Experience Design to design a concert hall that, with the help of lighting, technology and design, is completely in tune with the needs of its visitors.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101854" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-7.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The festive re-opening is on Saturday, 9 October.</p>
<p>In the middle of Eindhoven now stands the absolute music centre of the future, a place where lighting, design and technology are integrated innovatively, without it becoming merely a high-tech building.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101856" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-9.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="308" /></p>
<p>Niels van Eijk and Miriam van der Lubbe of Geldrop designed both the interior and the exterior around the central idea of the Concert Hall as a meeting place.</p>
<p><img title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-28.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="385" /></p>
<p>Together with Philips Ambient Experience Design, Hypsos and Rapenburg Plaza, the duo produced an exceptional composition of light, image and specially developed technology.</p>
<p><img title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-30.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="684" /></p>
<p>Take for example the way concert-goers are led intuitively from foyer to concert hall by way of subtle lighting signs which move from a high-tech wall and over the ceiling.</p>
<p><img title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-12.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe designed every detail especially for this project, from the enormous glass façade to the foyers and furniture, from the working wear to the crockery.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101858" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-11.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The most remarkable change is to the main entrance of the new Concert Hall.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101861" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-14.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="207" /></p>
<p>This consists of a forward-leaning glass façade, 25 meters wide and 13 meters high.</p>
<p><img title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-13.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="665" /></p>
<p>Behind it is a cultural city-foyer where people are welcome throughout the day for a cup of coffee, and to listen to, and buy music.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101862" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-15.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="415" /></p>
<p>The city-foyer will be fitted with an ambient wall, several meters long, consisting of thousands of led lights, on which films, works of art and concerts will be projected.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101863" title="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2010/11/dzn_Frits-Philips-Concert-Hall-by-Van-Eijk-Van-der-Lubbe-16.jpg" alt="Frits Philips Concert Hall by Van Eijk &amp; Van der Lubbe" width="468" height="399" /></p>
<p>Visual artist Gerard Hadders realised the content of this living wall.</p>

<p>An area of the table's surface is leveled while the rest is raised and bumpy. "That is the place for a person to sit down and enjoy the view on this hypnotic structure," says Weiss.</p>

<p>Weiss claims that the technique is derived from a traditional Dutch technique called oyster veneer, where twigs are sliced into rings and assembled into decorative patterns.</p>

<p>Here's some text from Weiss:<br />
--</p>
<p>Title: ‘Table With A View’<br />
Of the ‘Refined’-Series<br />
Year: 2008<br />
Material: Charcoal on MDF, wood<br />
Technique: Oyster Veneer Technique<br />
Dimensions: 60 x 120 x h70 cm</p>
<p>‘Table With A View’ is the first piece of the new ‘Refined’–series by Anke Weiss. The goal of the series is to produce valuable objects by refinement. Through the process of refinement value is added to previously non-precious materials. This can be achieved through the use of another, more precious material or through the manner material is applied or treated.</p>
<p>‘Table With A View’ consists of a MDF plate covered with charcoal that is treated with a fixative. In this work it is obvious that the charcoal as a material only does not refine the MDF by itself; it is the way the thousands of pieces are put together that produces the effect of refinement.</p>
<p>The formal aesthetic of an organic, molecular/cell-based structure is used to create a pattern that is recognizable from Weiss’ earlier work. The work is done by hand, in a meticulous effort, taking its time to evolve over time.</p>
<p>The virtuous and wavelike surface gained by the process is three-dimensional. On one side the table surface is flattened. That is the place for a person to sit down and enjoy the view on this hypnotic structure.</p>
<p>The pattern is achieved by using a technique based on the traditional oyster veneer technique. Oyster veneer is produced by transversed slicing / sawing of wooden twigs or stems. The slices of this sawn veneer show the year rings of the wood. By placing these thin stems in an orderly way, intriguing patterns can be formed.</p>
<p>This technique has a Dutch origin and has been applied often in the mid 17th century on cabinets and drawers. The used woods for this purpose are normally olive or nut.<br />
The end result of this process is an intricately patterned and interesting veneer that is extremely beautiful to look at, even before polishing.</p>
<p>Working with oysters today is rare.</p>
