Product news: Swedish design duo Mattias Ståhlbom and Gabriella Gustafson of TAF have created a table with an upside-down underframe for Danish producers Hay.

The Upside Down furniture by TAF for Hay exposes the wooden construction details that are usually hidden.

"The inspiration in this case was to show the handicraft that you always see when you look under a piece of furniture in a clear and obvious way," Mattias Ståhlbom told Dezeen. "This is in order to make the product easier to understand and relate to, and the fact that it turned out to also become a constructional advantage is of course a bonus."

The pieces are made from natural ash and come flat-packed in a range of three sizes that can be used as tables and stools. The collection is on show as part of the Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition at Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen until 2 November.

Eight poles and a board made of forest waste bolt together to make a flat-pack table by Japanese designers Hiroyuki Miyabe and Jun Yoshimura of SPEAC.

Called For Rest Table, it can be bolted together easily and has been painted with accents of white at the end of some sections and the bottom of two legs.

It's made from thinnings of hinoki cypress - a slow growing tree predominantly found in Japan - that would otherwise be thrown away.

Back in 2008 we featured the renovation of an ivy-covered house by SPEAC. Take a look at it here.

The information that follows is from SPEAC:

Double wishes

The name of this table is For Rest Table. This name has double meanings.

The first is “For rest”. The second is the wish for revival of sustainable environment of a forest.

We know that healthy circulation of forest thinning waste is indispensable to revive and sustain Japanese forest.

This table is one of the effective utilization of sustainable wood.

Sectional table with good texture

This table is sectional and consists of one plate and 8 poles. We can put together very easily without special tools.

All parts are made of Japanese cypress “Hinoki”. And we can enjoy very good texture and fragrance of wood.

Reasonable shipping cost

These parts of the table can be packed compactly. We can ship saving cost and energy.

Design: SPEAC,inc./Hiroyuki Miyabe/ Jun Yoshimura
Project Year: 2012
Photographs: SPEAC,inc.

Here is some more information from the designer:

These slippers are constructed from a single piece of natural wool felt, their 3D form being created by complex 2D geometry of the pattern.

The shapes are die-cut from sheets of 5mm thick felt with minimal, simple and affordable tooling - making this product very suitable for small-scale local production.

The slippers are delivered flat-packed for assembly by the user by "sewing" the seams with the standard laces supplied in a colour of their choice.

The act of self-assembling the slippers increases the sense of ownership and emotional connection with them and allows for personalisation through the choice of laces used.

House and Gardens Scholarship helped my to invest in the die-cutting tools in order to produce a range in ten standard sizes that I will be selling directly via a dedicated website opening next september.
