Located 100 kilometres from São Paulo, the two-storey clubhouse serves two 18-hole courses at the Fazenda Boa Vista leisure complex.

Concrete encases the lower floor of the building, which is sunken into the sloping landscape, while the upper floor comprises a sequence of rooms and terraces with glass walls and a chunky timber frame.

We've now announced winners for all the awards, including World Building of the Year, Future Project of the Year and Landscape of the Year, as well as all the category winners from day one and day two.

The house includes a cinema, wide outdoor patios for entertaining and a swimming pool running the length of the garden.

The four boxy shapes that make up the house are each finished in a different material – pebble-blasted concrete for the living quarters, exposed concrete for the office, wood for the entertaining area and sand-blasted concrete for the dining area.

An indoor garden leads to the main floor, where the living rooms, kitchen, bedrooms and entertaining areas are situated.

The entertaining areas include five patios, a cinema room and a long swimming pool.

On the lower floor is the gym and children's playroom, and in the basement is the sauna.

A large garage also provides room for the homeowner's collection of classic cars.

The house and patios are positioned to make the most of the natural light while keeping the temperature cool.

Existing trees on the site were incorporated into the patio design, and a plant-filled atrium with multiple skylights sits between corridors in the centre of the house.

Grecia House

Grecia House is located on a corner plot featuring 4.830 sq m in a residential area in São Paulo, Brazil.

The client wanted a house where he could enjoy the company of his kids and many friends intensely.

For that purpose, he asked for ample and various entertaining areas, such as a cinema room, a recreation room for the children and a sauna.

And being a sports enthusiast, he wanted the house to feature a large gym room and a long swimming lane as well.

From the main entrance, one approaches the house – set at the back of the land - by foot, up and through a wooded area, and across a wide garden.

The house comes then fully to sight: 4 joined but distinct blocks, respectively covered with pebble-blasted concrete plaques (living quarters), exposed concrete (office), wood planks (entertaining area) and sand-blasted concrete plaques (dining and service areas).

A driveway set at the back of the house can be used by those arriving by car.

Past a garage where the owner keeps his antique cars collection and up through a lush indoor garden, one comes to the main floor, where all living and entertaining areas are to find – except for the gym and recreation rooms, located on the lower floor, and the sauna, on the basement.

The location of the house was also defined by (huge) existing trees. An important part of the concept, the decision to build small patios and gardens around them allows for broad natural light and ventilation inside the house, helping to keep temperature cool and pleasant green views whichever way one looks at.

The seven boxy volumes that make up the house are all different sizes and are each finished in different materials, including precast concrete and white painted bricks.

The blocks are arranged at the front of the site to leave room for a large garden and pool behind while the staggered layout creates corridors in between for displaying artworks.

The Yucatan House was built in the leafy neighborhood of Jardim America, in São Paulo, Brazil, for a young couple and their three children.

Contemporary art collectors, they wanted a spacious, bright and informal atmosphere home where they could raise their children and see them grow in close contact with nature, while also display the various pieces in their collection.

Thus, everything about the house somehow reflects that high-spirited family and their lifestyle: the combination of volumes, the organization of the areas, the choice of materials, the lighting, the greenery, the pool.

Seven boxlike volumes – different sizes, different finishes – were distributed asymmetrically at the front part of the land, leaving a vast garden in the back.

From the entrance, a long flat surface – a wall covered in aluminum plaques painted black, part of the volume that houses the garage – progresses across the blocks to the one containing the kitchen, followed by the block housing the dining room.

To the left of those 3 volumes, sometimes jutting out a little, other times receding, the remaining 4 blocks are laid out, which feature, respectively: the daughter’s and guest bedrooms, the sons’ bedrooms, the master bedroom, and the TV room and gym.

The “scattered” layout leaves generous spaces between the volumes that, topped by a wood-covered ceiling slab, not only serve as circulation, but also shelter the main living room, the family room and the works of art.

A natural pool, extending from the dining room to the back portion of the land, features a system to use, reuse and treat water that combines water plants and various fish, and is the children’s greatest joy and fun.

This holiday home by Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld comprises three perpendicular volumes built into a slope in Piracicaba, Brazil.

A half-submerged garage and storage area is the lowest of three elements and punctuated by a series of concrete pillars.

Above, the ground floor forms an L-shaped plan with the living and dining space in one wing and the kitchen and services in the other.

The ground floor has a curtain wall of glazing in front of the living and dining room to afford views of a swimming pool, while the adjacent wing is clad in vertical concrete slabs.

The first floor, which houses the bedrooms, sits above the kitchen and services with a roof terrace formed over the other wing.

It is intended to serve as a meeting point for a family whose members are scattered across various cities around the state.

The 2,000m2 (21,500 ft2) land resulted from merging 2 corner-lots in a gated condominium.

Not only did the position of the house take into account the sloping contour of the land, but also its orientation (North), as to provide the bedrooms and social areas with the best possible sunlight.

The distribution on 3 floors arranged in perpendicular axes allows the land displacement to be overcome naturally, and makes the garden accessible from any floor:

- the lower ground, semi subterranean and positioned in the lowest level of the land, parallel to the contour lines, houses storage areas, the mechanical room and garage - that standing on grid pillars.

- the ground floor, laid out as an L and accessible from the street through an S-shaped ramp, houses the service areas and the lounge/dining room - the latter, fully encased in glass, on one side overlooks the back portion of the land and merges with the pool deck through wide sliding doors; on the other side, is shielded from the sun and secluded from the street by a long sun baffle made of large vertical concrete slabs, unevenly placed along the whole facade.

- the upper floor, a volume that stretches perpendicularly to the contour of the land and that, at one end, cantilevers towards the street, and at the other is planted on the higher section of the land, houses the bedrooms and the den – the latter opening onto a large wooden deck, build on the ceiling slab over the lounge/dining room.

The swimming pool is snug in the nook of the “L” formed by the social and service areas, and the slope rising to the higher sections of the land.

Livraria de Vila is a bookshop in São Paulo with a store-front made of revolving bookcases, designed by Brazilian studio Isay Weinfeld Arquitecto.

Completed in 2007, the project involved the renovation of a two-storey house on the deep narrow site and included the addition of a basement.

The walls of each level are covered with shelves from floor to ceiling and apertures between floors are lined with books too.

The basement level is dedicated to childrens books, in addition to a small auditorium for lectures and courses.

The Livraria da Vila is the result of the refurbishment of a two-story house, built on a very narrow plot in São Paulo.

From start, it was clear an open plan was needed, as to better arrange products and circulation. For that reason, significant structural alterations were performed to the existing building, such as the incorporation of metal parts that would make it possible to displace the pillars to the outer sections of the building, and reinforce its foundations.

The inclusion of one level – basement – allowed for the setting up of an entire floor exclusive for children, in addition to a small auditorium, to hold courses and lectures.

We believe that in a commercial venue, a project must always be developed to enhance the product, its in-store merchandising, and its sales.

There are, undoubtedly, innumerable ways to achieve this goal, and it is probably the nature of the approach that distinguishes each project.

In the case of Livraria da Vila, such comfort is translated into the composition of low-ceiling spaces, dark tones, indirect lighting and infinite shelves – in careful disarray – covering all walls to the ceiling.

Whichever direction one looks at, there are books, and an unpretentious feel, reminding that of used-book stores, making customers at ease to browse the shelves for the books they want, to leaf through or even read them in the couches and easy chairs scattered around the multiple stories.

The pivoting window-shelf-doors, and the voids “connecting” one floor to the next, are other project elements that, unexpected, invite customers to enter and explore the store and its various spaces.
