Here's some more information from Schoner:

Z Step is a display system made from sheet metal based on steps of 33 x 33 x 33 cm. Two of these steps can be stacked and assembled in different ways. They form different spacial configurations.

There are magnetic bars, knobs and coat-hangers carved from beech wood to fix items on the Z Step. In this way it becomes easy and versatile to show any kind of item like books, magazines, shoes, clothes, accessories, or other kind of products.

Craft and Scenography 08

There is nothing more thrilling than a good conversation between different disciplines. We bring together a range of contemporary cultures to create an impressive set of references around craft and scenography – some of them are visually pleasing, some of them are collectable.

Dresses whirl past on a radio-controlled coat hanger in this installation by Amsterdam-based German designer Michael Schoner at the Droog flagship store in Amsterdam. The movement was controlled by manipulating two fans, taken from computers, at the top of the mobile while bags of sugar and salt provided counterweights.

Here are some more details from Schoner:

The Coathanger Chopper is a radio-controlled coat-hanger, dangling from a mobile, which allows it to move around in space.

It is powered by two 1,8 watt computer fans, that can be tilted up and down like the eyebrows of Number 5 (the robot of the 1986 movie "short circuit"), thus causing the hanger to spin or move for - or backward. The downward draft of the rotors causes light cloth to wave. In motion the cloth appear to be floating, sometimes moving slow sometimes slinging by fast on the levers of the mobile. Two kilos of salt and one kilo of sugar act as counterweights.

The Coathanger Chopper was shown as part of Amsterdam’s fashion exhibition Winter Salon in collaboration with Painted (Saskia van Drimmelen and Margreet Sweerts). The installation at Droog Designs’s flagship store featured a large projection of the song “The One” by Toversex (Pieter Wackers and Erzsi Pennings) starring Natascha De Jong dancing.

Behind a wooden screen people could try on knitwear out of the “Secrets” collection and place an order.

Jan 21st - Feb 5th 2012 at Droog Design flagship store, Amsterdam

Amsterdam designer Michael Schoner has designed a series of paper masks without eye holes that look a bit like animals.

Called A3 Animals, the geometric patterns can be printed out on various sizes of paper and stapled together.

Make your own here.

Photographs are by Anika Schwarzlose and Jonas Lund.

The text below is from Schoner:

A3 Animals

The A3 Animals (some of them are actually A2) are a DIN normed piece of paper folded into an animal head that one can wear on his own. It is held together by ordinary office material: staples and rubber bands.

You can download them as pdf, print them on your office machine and duplicate it in mass quantities (if you like) for little money.

They have a pattern on them rasterized Xerox style which plays with geometry in its folded and unfolded state.

When put on the masks become an extension to the body or a sculpture on your head.

There are no holes for the eyes to see through. This way it's more about the geometric shape you wear on your head.

You are caught in the inside space of the animal and vulnerable to the outside.

Above: Fox

You are a paper-shaman connecting to that animal. Eventually the masks stay behind.

Above: Cat

These “authentic native office artifacts” decay after a short lifespan in the wastepaper basket.

Above: Bear

German designer Michael Schoner of NL Architects has designed a bench that plays music from passing mobile phones via Bluetooth.

The bench was on display at the Urban Play event 2 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, last month.

Urban Play is an international project by Droog Design, created and curated by Scott Burnham and presented as part of ExperimentaDesign Amsterdam 2008.

See a movie about the Boombench here. The following is from NL architects:

--

Boombench

For the design of the ‘Boombench’ NL architects transformed a regular piece of street furniture into a sound system.

This seemingly normal street bench reveals its hidden gimmick when it is activated via Bluetooth, allowing the public to play the music on their mobile phones.

Street furniture becomes ghettoblaster and passer-by becomes DJ.
