<p>"We use colour as an international language that everyone understands," <a href="http://www.stone-dsgns.es/" target="_blank">Stone Designs</a> partner Cutu Mazuelos told Dezeen. "We love to use colour as a tool that lets people feel the atmosphere that we want to show them, turning the experience of buying medicine into a social event."</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-285220" title="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2013/01/dezeen_De-los-Austrias-Chemist-by-Stone-Designs_1.jpg" alt="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>Some of the wireframe boxes sit on a wooden platform, while others are mounted onto the walls.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-285223" title="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2013/01/dezeen_De-los-Austrias-Chemist-by-Stone-Designs_3.jpg" alt="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>Shelving colours shift from vivid red and pink on one wall to bright orange and yellow on another. Meanwhile, the checkout counter is finished in pale blue and features a white marble surface.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-285224" title="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2013/01/dezeen_De-los-Austrias-Chemist-by-Stone-Designs_4.jpg" alt="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>Pendant lights hang from the ceiling and patterned tiles cover the floor.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-285225" title="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2013/01/dezeen_De-los-Austrias-Chemist-by-Stone-Designs_5.jpg" alt="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>The shop is located beneath an old bridge, giving the space an arched ceiling.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-285226" title="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2013/01/dezeen_De-los-Austrias-Chemist-by-Stone-Designs_6.jpg" alt="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>Other pharmacies designed in recent years include <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/2011/06/01/placebo-pharmacy-by-klab-architecture/">one in Athens with a facade punctured by Braille</a> and <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/2011/09/17/pharmacy-m-by-caan-architecten/">one in Belgium with a sliding cross-shaped window</a>. See <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/tag/pharmacies/">more pharmacies on Dezeen</a>.</p>
<p>Here's a project description from Stone Designs:</p>
<hr />
<p>Farmacia de los Austrias The Farmacia de los Austrias (De los Austrias Chemist) is placed in one of the most emblematic areas of historical Madrid.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-285228" title="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2013/01/dezeen_De-los-Austrias-Chemist-by-Stone-Designs_8.jpg" alt="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" width="468" height="354" /></p>
<p>Our initial idea was to create a new space typology, in which tradition and vanguard merge in such a subtle way that originate a slow and deliberate dialogue in which no element stands out of the rest, creating an almost musical harmony.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-285229" title="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2013/01/dezeen_De-los-Austrias-Chemist-by-Stone-Designs_9.jpg" alt="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>Products are displayed in really thin metallic structures standing in the bluish walls, creating a sweet and warm chromatic range that makes us feel at ease. This space transmits that we are attended by real professionals, but with a more human touch than usual.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-285230" title="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2013/01/dezeen_De-los-Austrias-Chemist-by-Stone-Designs_10.jpg" alt="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>Some details such as the white marble counter help to strengthen the concept of the “well done job” that oozes the old; while other materials like the tiled floor, embrace us in a warm and close atmosphere.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-285231" title="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2013/01/dezeen_De-los-Austrias-Chemist-by-Stone-Designs_11.gif" alt="De los Austrias Chemist by Stone Designs" width="468" height="596" /></p>
<p>It is a project in which, due to its nature and small size, even the slightest detail has been taken care of, creating an enormous sensory universe that makes the visitor enjoy a most gratifying experience.</p>

<p>Photography is by Hiroki Kawata.</p>
<p>Here's some more explanation from Yasuo Imazu:</p>
<hr />
<p>This is a new construction of a Pharmacy, in the center of Osaka city area of Japan.</p>
<p><img title="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2012/01/dezeen_Ogimachi-Global-Dispensing-Pharmacy-by-TKY-Japan-8.jpg" alt="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The site once used to be a farm road. When the World War II ended, a small house was built on the road and stayed there illegally for several ten years. After the house was removed, the site then became a residential land.</p>
<p><img title="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2012/01/dezeen_Ogimachi-Global-Dispensing-Pharmacy-by-TKY-Japan-9.jpg" alt="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>In front of this newly built pharmacy, there are remains of a sidewalk, which define an original function of the site used to have, thus the building is set back.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-189690" title="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2012/01/dezeen_Ogimachi-Global-Dispensing-Pharmacy-by-TKY-Japan-12.jpg" alt="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>That the site was a road, and that there was a small illegally-built house, were the two historical contexts we valuated as the uniqueness of the site.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-189691" title="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2012/01/dezeen_Ogimachi-Global-Dispensing-Pharmacy-by-TKY-Japan-13.jpg" alt="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The form of the building follows the shape of the site with a gabled roof on top which realizes the simplest form of a house. The continuous ceiling which visually creates almost a linear perspective reflects the linear shape of the site, the path or the road.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-189693" title="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2012/01/dezeen_Ogimachi-Global-Dispensing-Pharmacy-by-TKY-Japan-15.jpg" alt="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" width="468" height="437" /></p>
<p>Though it is surrounded by volumetric urban buildings, we kept the minimum volume of a single story house, recalling a persisting memory of the site, the little house.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-189694" title="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2012/01/dezeen_Ogimachi-Global-Dispensing-Pharmacy-by-TKY-Japan-16.jpg" alt="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" width="468" height="403" /></p>
<p>The structure is consisted of simple steel-frame which allows the wood columns and rafters to be exposed, thus provides warm and intimate atmosphere to the customers.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-189695" title="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2012/01/dezeen_Ogimachi-Global-Dispensing-Pharmacy-by-TKY-Japan-18.jpg" alt="Ogimachi Global Dispensing Pharmacy by TKY Japan" width="468" height="666" /></p>

<p>Pharmacy M was recently completed by Belgian studio <a href="http://www.caan.be/" target="_blank">Caan Architecten</a> and is situated on the site of a former farm in the outskirts of Ghent.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156108" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_3.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The sales floor occupies the entire ground floor of the building, while a lab can be found in the basement and a small apartment is located on the first floor.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156109" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_4.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The pharmacy is constructed from grey brickwork but also features glass walls on three elevations.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156110" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_5.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The first floor apartment can only be accessed though the shop and opens out to a roof terrace.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156111" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_6.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>A few other pharmacies from the Dezeen archive include <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/2011/06/01/placebo-pharmacy-by-klab-architecture/">one with a facade punctured by Braille lettering</a> and <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/2011/04/06/pharmacy-in-koukaki-by-klab-architecture/">another with a tree-like green panel ceiling</a> - <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/tag/pharmacies/">see more stories about pharmacies here</a>.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156112" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_7.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Photography is by <a href="http://www.cafeine.be/" target="_blank">Thomas De Bruyne</a>.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156113" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_8.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="385" /></p>
<p>Here are some more details from the architects:</p>
<hr />
<p>The pharmacy used to be located at an old farm  on the existing parcel. The parcel is situated next to the main road populated by a diverse array of types of building.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156114" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_9.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Due to the outdated facilities and limited potential of the farm, it was a logical step to demolish the farm and to start from scratch.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156115" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_10.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="380" /></p>
<p>At the front side (Keistraat) the new volume has been placed on the same border line as the old farm to integrate the new construction into the existing context.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156116" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_11.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="420" /></p>
<p>The program of the pharmacy defined the design of the building.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156117" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_12.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="653" /></p>
<p>The ground floor locates all the necessary facilities for a modern pharmacy, such as an extensive sales area, a night safe, a preparation area…</p>
<p>The surrounded glass wall creates a light and transparency which leads to a greater accessibility.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156118" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_13.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The basement has been used for storage and lab area.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156119" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_14.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="621" /></p>
<p>At the first floor a private space is located with bathroom, kitchen/ dining/ sleeping area. The terrace and green roof elevate the entire space. The green roof is also a visible mark from the street side.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156120" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_15.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>The design and material choices (glass, dark grey bricks) form the modern shape of the building, which we consider to be well integrated in its surrounding context.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156121" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_16.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The transparent and minimal appearance of the building makes it more accessible, identifiable… a ‘landmark’.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-156122" title="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/09/dezeen_Pharmacy-M-by-Caan-Architecten_17.jpg" alt="Pharmacy M by Caan Architecten" width="468" height="372" /></p>
<p>The building contributes to a more contemporary way of service, which was required for this pharmacy.</p>

<p>The information below is from the designers:</p>
<hr />
<p>The design process for this large (600m2) super-local pharmacy forced us to shift our viewpoint and come up with a virtual building—a placebo pharmacy. The octagonal shape of the existing structure was re-formed into a cylinder in order to create a spiral which seeks to converse with the rapid motion on Vouliagmenis Avenue, the urban artery on which the building stands.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-130602" title="Placebo Pharmacy by Atelier Tekuto " src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/06/dezeen_Placebo-Pharmacy-by-Atelier-Tekuto-10.jpg" alt="Placebo Pharmacy by Atelier Tekuto " width="468" height="413" /></p>
<p>The panels of the façade are perforated using Braille, which both alludes to the system’s use on pharmaceutical packaging and boosts visibility by allowing the light to find its way into the interior. The new facade also protects the interior while acting as a lure for passers-by. Inside, the product display mirrors the circular frontage, while a ramp up to the upper level extends the dynamism of the exterior spiral into the interior space.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-130603" title="Placebo Pharmacy by Atelier Tekuto " src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/06/dezeen_Placebo-Pharmacy-by-Atelier-Tekuto-11.jpg" alt="Placebo Pharmacy by Atelier Tekuto " width="468" height="362" /></p>
<p>The Pharmacy is arranged over two floors, the ground floor being the primary shop space with the upper mezzanine floor consisting of ancillary office space used as a temporary surgery for visiting health professionals.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-130604" title="Placebo Pharmacy by Atelier Tekuto " src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/06/dezeen_Placebo-Pharmacy-by-Atelier-Tekuto-12.jpg" alt="Placebo Pharmacy by Atelier Tekuto " width="468" height="517" /></p>
<p>The pharmacy is arranged in plan in a radial pattern with the main cashiers desk acting as the focal point. The product displays fan out from this focal point giving the cashier the ability to view the whole pharmacy from this central area. The drug dispensary, preparation areas and toilets are also arranged off this radial pattern. This pattern gives a natural flow to the space and allows light deep into the center of the plan at all times throughout the day.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-130595" title="Placebo Pharmacy by Atelier Tekuto" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/06/dezeen_Placebo-Pharmacy-by-Atelier-Tekuto-3.jpg" alt="Placebo Pharmacy by Atelier Tekuto" width="468" height="386" /></p>

<p>The information below is from KLab architecture:</p>
<hr />
<p>Pharmacy-Cosmetics store – Koukaki – Athens</p>
<p>In one of the oldest neighborhoods of Athens close to the new Acropolis museum KLab architects were commissioned to create a new pharmacy-cosmetics store on the ground floor of an apartment building.</p>
<p><img title="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/04/dzn_Pharmacy-in-Koukaki-by-KLab-Architecture-6.jpg" alt="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>Our approach was to create a context within the certain context that existed. The scenario of a pharmacy come out of nature contributed to the idea that nature coexists with technology innovation to create pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. As response to that we exposed a tech-nature environment a lab within the nature within the city.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-123596" title="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/04/dzn_Pharmacy-in-Koukaki-by-KLab-Architecture-9.jpg" alt="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" width="468" height="316" /></p>
<p>Branches as a dislocated shadow phenomenon of the adjacent trees create and protect the façade and the products from the heat and the sun. Like trees holding the old apartment building, disassociate the urban typology to create an eye catching façade.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-123597" title="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/04/dzn_Pharmacy-in-Koukaki-by-KLab-Architecture-10.jpg" alt="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" width="468" height="624" /></p>
<p>In the interior emphasis was given to the ceiling and to the exposed concrete columns that represent the forest.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-123598" title="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/04/dzn_Pharmacy-in-Koukaki-by-KLab-Architecture-11.jpg" alt="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" width="468" height="328" /></p>
<p>The reception desk follows the concept and becomes the center of the store.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-123600" title="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/04/dzn_Pharmacy-in-Koukaki-by-KLab-Architecture-13.jpg" alt="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" width="468" height="280" /></p>
<p>Perspex and white lacquered shelves designed by Klab create a unique display atmosphere.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-123602" title="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/04/dzn_Pharmacy-in-Koukaki-by-KLab-Architecture-15.jpg" alt="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" width="468" height="457" /></p>
<p>A metallic stair leads to the lower level a lab area where prescriptions are been produced and an office space.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-123604" title="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/04/dzn_Pharmacy-in-Koukaki-by-KLab-Architecture-17.jpg" alt="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" width="468" height="429" /></p>
<p>Alternatively the area can be used for seminars and larger items display space. The stairs wall is being engraved with plaster and lighting creating plant morphing shapes.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-123603" title="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" src="http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2011/04/dzn_Pharmacy-in-Koukaki-by-KLab-Architecture-16.jpg" alt="Pharmacy in Koukaki by KLab Architecture" width="468" height="723" /></p>
