Here's some information from the architects:

Schaustelle - Space for Experiments

Designed by J. MAYER H., the 'Schaustelle' or 'show site' will be a temporary pavilion and platform for the four collections housed at the Pinakothek der Moderne.

In an official statement, Dr. Markus Michalke, Chairman of the Pinakothek der Moderne Foundation announced:

The Pinakothek der Moderne is due to close in February 2013 for renovation work and is expected to reopen again in September 2013. The temporary closure has been seen as an opportunity that will give rise to a makeshift exhibition building - the Schaustelle. Set up for the duration of the renovations, it will provide the four collections at the Pinakothek der Moderne with a lively platform to hold exhibitions, workshops, talks, performances, film screenings and video installations and much more besides. The scheme has been initiated by the Pinakothek der Moderne Foundation.

The ground floor of the Schaustelle contains a large exhibition space that can be easily adapted to suit the requirements of the various exhibitions of the four collections. The plans foresee the use of the open scaffold structure in the outdoor area as a projection area, making it available as an addition exhibition space. The scaffold structure allows visitors to walk through it, while they catch new glimpses of the city beyond, set off by works on display from the collections. Accompanying events, including some at night, multimedia projections in the outdoor area and a viewing platform overlooking the city centre: all these things will cast the Kunstareal in a new and exciting light. The Pinakothek der Moderne Foundation and the four institutions in the Pinakothek der Moderne are also using the temporary platform to send a political signal to push for the completion of the second section of the main building. The Schaustelle is an operational platform and think tank in one.

The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 Present Wendy by HWKN, Winner of the 2012 Young Architects Program, at MoMA PS1

The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 announce the opening of Wendy, the HWKN (Hollwich Kushner)-designed winner of the annual Young Architects Program (YAP) in New York. Now in its 13th edition, the Young Architects Program at MoMA and MoMA PS1 has been committed to offering emerging architectural talent the opportunity to design and present innovative projects, challenging each year’s winners to develop creative designs for a temporary, outdoor installation at MoMA PS1 that provides shade, seating, and water. The architects must also work within guidelines that address environmental issues, including sustainability and recycling. HWKN, drawn from among five finalists, designed a temporary urban architecture for the 2012 Warm Up summer music series in MoMA PS1’s outdoor courtyard which begins July 7, 2012.

The project, Wendy, opening to the public at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City on July 1, 2012, is an experiment that tests how far the boundaries of architecture can expand to create ecological and social effect. Wendy is composed of fabric treated with a ground breaking titania nanofilm to neutralize airborne pollutants. During the summer of 2012, Wendy will clean the air to an equivalent of taking 260 cars off the road.

Wendy’s boundary is defined by tools like shade, wind, rain, music, and visual identity to reach past the confines of physical limits. Spiky fabric arms shoot out blasts of cool air, music, and water (via cannons and mists) to create social zones throughout the courtyard.

Wendy sits far enough away from the stage used for the annual Warm Up events to let the concerts go on unimpeded, but close enough to the entrance to create a filter and initial impact to visitors. It bridges over the walls into the large and small courtyards of MoMA PS1.

Wendy features a simple, inexpensive construction system: the scaffold is deployed efficiently to create a 56’ x 56’ x 46’ volume to form the largest surface area possible.

In addition to Knippers Helbig, structural engineers on the project, the Wendy project was assisted by PURETi (air-purifying surface treatment), Cristal Global (titania dioxide), SDFS (general contractor), SAFWAY (scaffolding provider), Krinner Ground Screws (foundations), Dornbracht (water systems), Davis & Warshow (water and technology), Big Ass Fans (fans), Transsolar (climate engineering), Dazian (custom sewing), Bo-Tex (fabric), Art Domantay (production consultant), Bruce Mau Design (graphic identity), Soho Repographics (printing), 2x4 (merchandise design), Pentagram (merchandise design) and Supima Cotton (merchandise materials), and a team of amazing volunteers.

The other finalists for this year’s MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program were AEDS|Ammar Eloueini Digit-all Studio (Ammar Eloueini, Paris, France/New Orleans, LA), Cameron Wu (Cambridge, MA), Ibañez Kim Studio (Mariana Ibañez and Simon Kim, Cambridge, MA), and UrbanLab (Martin Felsen and Sarah Dunn, Chicago, IL).

An exhibition of the five finalists' proposed projects will be on view at MoMA over the summer, organized by Pedro Gadanho, Curator, with Whitney May, Department Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition will also feature the five finalists from YAP MAXXI in Rome on view now, in conjunction with the National Museum of XXI Century Arts, and YAP Chile in Santiago which will be on view in December, in conjunction with the organization CONSTRUCTO. In 2013, the YAP International program will expand to Istanbul with a recently announced collaboration with Istanbul Modern.

Wendy is due to open at the end of June.

Last year a twisted rope canopy occupied the courtyard for the summer, while the year before visitors could take part in circus-style acrobatics.

Here's some more explanation from HWKN:

HWKN’S Wendy to Provide the Setting for the Warm Up Summer Music Series in the Courtyard of MoMA PS1

The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 announce HWKN (Matthias Hollwich and Marc Kushner, New York) as the winner of the annual Young Architects Program (YAP) in New York. HWKN, drawn from among five finalists, will design a temporary urban landscape for the 2012 Warm Up summer music series in MoMA PS1’s outdoor courtyard.

The winning project, Wendy, opening at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City in late June, is an experiment that tests how far the boundaries of architecture can expand to create ecological and social effect. Wendy is composed of nylon fabric treated with a ground breaking titania nanoparticle spray to neutralize airborne pollutants. During the summer of 2012, Wendy will clean the air to an equivalent of taking 260 cars off the road. Wendy’s boundary is defined by tools like shade, wind, rain, music, and visual identity to reach past the confines of physical limits. Wendy crafts an environment, not just a space. Spiky arms made of the nylon fabric mentioned above will reach out with micro-programs like blasts of cool air, music, water cannons and mists to create social zones throughout the courtyard. Wendy sits far enough away from the stage used for the annual Warm Up events to let the concerts go on unimpeded, but close enough to the entrance to create a filter and initial impact to visitors. It bridges over the walls into the large and small courtyards of MoMA PS1. Wendy features a simple, inexpensive construction system: the scaffold is deployed efficiently to create a 70’ x 70’ x 45’ volume to form the largest surface area possible.

“The jury was greeted with a particularly impressive group of proposals this year, all of which represented months of sustained research into problems both specific to a summer installation at MoMA PS1 and to new directions for architecture in terms of material research, ecological responses, and recyclability,” said Barry Bergdoll, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at MoMA. “HollwichKushner's design is at once based in emerging science of materials related to environmental cleansing—the material actually removes the carbon dioxide emissions produced by cars in Long Island City—but also on a zany quest for a space that is simply good fun. Even passengers on the elevated 7 train will feel compelled to head to MoMA PS1 to experience Wendy and figure out what in the world it can possibly be all about."

"HollwichKushner is proposing a monumental gesture in the MoMA PS1 courtyard that, in its dimension and volume, creates a dialogue with the, at the moment, currently installed geodesic dome,” added Klaus Biesenbach, Director of MoMA PS1 and Chief Curator at Large at MoMA. “While the dome hosts our winter series SUNDAY SESSIONS, Wendy will enhance the courtyard environment for our famed summer Warm Up series. The project is not only innovative but also visualizes ecological awareness and responsibility."

“HollwichKushner's proposal for YAP 2012 is sure to make a memorable impression over the summer at MoMA PS1,” said Pedro Gadanho, Curator in MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design. “It is iconic, but with a twist. By combining off-the-shelf materials and scaffolding systems with the latest cry in nanotechnology it is able to produce both an out-of-the-box ecological statement and a bold architectural gesture. It is economical and terse in terms of its design, and yet, through its positioning and scale, it also smartly projects different possibilities for use and social appropriation across the entire site where it sits—including the ability to reach out for those outside the museum's walls.” The other finalists for this year’s MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program were AEDS|Ammar Eloueini Digit-all Studio (Ammar Eloueini, Paris, France/New Orleans, LA), Cameron Wu (Cambridge, MA), Ibañez Kim Studio (Mariana Ibañez and Simon Kim, Cambridge, MA), and UrbanLab (Martin Felsen and Sarah Dunn, Chicago, IL). An exhibition of the five finalists' proposed projects will be on view at MoMA over the summer, organized by Barry Bergdoll, MoMA Philip Johnson Chief Curator, with Whitney May, Department Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art.

Paris studio 1024 Architecture have completed a cafe made from scaffolding and shipping containers on an island on the Seine in Paris.

Les Grandes Tables is located on the Île Seguin, where architect Jean Nouvel is currently converting a car factory into a museum.

Elevated amidst the scaffolding structure is an oriented strand board box, which houses the first floor restaurant.

A staircase at the front of the building leads visitors up to this dining room, whilst an open space below is used for informal events and parties.

Another scaffolding structure published on Dezeen temporarily housed a temporary cafe, sauna and paddling pool - see our earlier story here.

Here's some more details from 1024 Architecture:

Les Grandes Tables de L’île

A restaurant/bar/open-air café positioned on Île Seguin in the middle of a temporary garden whilst waiting for the architect Jean Nouvel’s macro project to be implemented, Les Grandes Tables de L’ile is a place to meet, for haute cuisine and why not even parties to accompany the reconstruction of this island steeped in history.

Above: photograph is by C. Sancereau

The project is an architectural hybridization between an agricultural greenhouse, a barge and a timber-frame house.

Constructed from scaffolding, wood fibre panels and containers, according to the principle dear to the 1024 duo, the restaurant can be promptly extended by video and lighting effects by changing with the assistance of mapping for the duration of a party or a particular event.

A temporary retaurant by London firm Carmody Groarke has opened on the roof of a construction site overlooking the 2012 Olympic Park.

The structure is made of scaffolding and boards borrowed from the construction site, covered in recyclable plastic sheeting.

Located on top of the 35 metre-high Westfield Stratford City development, the pavilion is called Studio East and houses Studio East Dining by Bistrotheque.

It remains in place until 4 July. More information in our earlier story.

Photographs are by Luke Hayes.

Here's some further information from the architects:

From 16 June 2010, for a 3 week period, just 2000 guests will get to visit Carmody Groarke's striking pop-up pavilion as it hosts Studio East Dining by Bistrotheque.

Built within a live construction site, 35m atop Westfield Stratford City development, the pavilion provides the first views across London's Olympic Stadium, and Zaha Hadid's 2012 Aquatics Centre, forming a commanding presence on London's skyline.

A fast build with a life span of just 3 weeks, the primary structure, weighing 70 tons, is constructed from hired materials borrowed from the existing construction site, including: 2000 scaffolding boards, 3500 scaffolding poles, and reclaimed timber, used to create the walls and floors of the 800 square metre dining space.

The cladding material which encases the roof, is a semi-translucent membrane, using industrial grade heat retractable polyethylene which is 100% recycled after use; as with the other materials, all will be returned to the site afterwards and recycled without any waste. By night, the whole structure will glow, forming shadows and silhouettes of the events held within, creating a compelling jewel on London's skyline at sunset.

"When Westfield approached us to do something on the roof of their still-being-built Stratford City development, we instinctively felt Carmody Groarke would be the obvious people to partner with, and that the structure should be built from everyday materials found around the site, be very design led and to match up to the stunning views, making it truly iconic. This is the Rolls Royce of Pop-Ups." Pablo Flack, Co-Owner, Bistrotheque
