OMA (above) and BIG (below) went head-to-head in Miami for the competition to design the new Miami Beach Convention Center.

Zaha Hadid Architects won a competition to design a metro station for Riyadh in Saudi Arabia (below), while Foster + Partners revealed plans for two London skyscrapers and Wilkinson Eyre Architects won a competition to design a skyscraper on the harbourfront in Sydney.

Herzog & de Meuron was granted planning permission for a school of government and public policy at the University of Oxford in the UK and the Prince of Wales was under fire over plans to export the principles behind his controversial Poundbury development to Bahrain.

In skyscraper news, SOM unveiled plans to build Singapore's tallest tower, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture won a competition to design Mumbai's tallest tower and a skyscraper under construction in Beijing was compared to a giant penis.

We also reported on the shortlist for the Aga Khan Award 2013, including the repair and reconstruction of thatched residences on Flores Island, Indonesia, and an apartment block in Iran constructed using the otherwise useless offcuts from local stonecutting businesses (above).

This week the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre in Reykjavik scooped the most prestigious European architecture prize, the Mies van der Rohe Award. Read on for more highlights in architecture and design over the past seven days.

It was a big week for travel brand Virgin, with the first rocket-powered flight of the Virgin Galactic spacecraft and the unveiling of new Virgin Atlantic uniforms by Vivienne Westwood.

Our coverage of design from Milan took a colourful turn with Dennis Parren's light bulb that throws coloured shadows and Carnovsky's wallpaper that reveals different scenes under different colours of light.

MVRDV won a competition to masterplan a new business district in Shanghai and Broadway Malyan was chosen to masterplan a new 196-hectare residential and commercial district south of Kuala Lumpur (below).

In the UK, government ministers decided to scrap the draft design and technology syllabus for secondary schools and a bill to extend copyright protection on industrial design became law.

Copying was also the topic of one Dezeen and MINI World Tour report from Milan, with leading designers and manufacturers discussing the phenomenon of copying and how they are responding. In the other, Ron Arad talks to us about his 3D-printed glasses (above).

We've been reflecting on Milan design week, with designers including Yves Behar, Konstantin Grcic, Ron Arad and Stephen Burks discussing whether Milan can retain its importance in our latest Dezeen and MINI World Tour report. See our highlights of Milan 2013 here, including Zaha Hadid's sofas for Cassina inspired by rock formations (below).

The UK government's redesigned website was named Design of the Year in a ceremony at the Design Museum, before being called "boring" and "basic-looking" by Mail Online.

Thatch cropped up in a few architecture projects this week, including a glazed town hall in the Netherlands (above) and a house with straw on the walls as well as the roof.

Work got underway on Herzog & de Meuron's stadium in Bordeaux (above), OMA was chosen to to masterplan a new urban development south of the same city and BIG was selected to design a shopping and leisure area outside Paris (below).

Meanwhile Daniel Libeskind gained planning permission for a proposed peace centre on the site of the notorious former Maze prison in Belfast and the owners of a Santiago Calatrava-designed winery in Spain launched legal action demanding he pays part of the £1.7 million needed to fix the building's leaky roof.
