Glasgow-made watches by Paulin launch at Dezeen Watch Store

Dezeen Watch Store: Paulin wants to reinvigorate the British watchmaking industry – starting by designing and building its range of men's and women's watches in the brand's Scottish hometown.

Launching at Dezeen Watch Store, the first Paulin collection includes three analogue designs, including a chronograph that combines stopwatch functionality with a standard watch display.

In an interview with the Dezeen Watch Store Blog, brand co-founder Elizabeth Paulin said that the company was focused on bringing "the manufacture of high quality watches back to Britain."

"Glasgow has one of the lowest life expectancies in Europe, and it's not the fags or the Buckfast that's doing it. It's the lack of purpose in people's lives after manufacturing disappeared," she said. "We're not saying we can solve that, but we're setting out to see what happens."

Paulin watches are designed and assembled in Glasgow, although some parts are still sourced abroad, including the Japanese Miyota quartz movement – the mechanism that powers the timepiece.

None of the styles include numbers on the watch face – instead markers delineate the hours. The calfskin straps are secured using a simple loop of stitches on each side on all the designs.

The C200 is a chronograph-style timepiece available in four colour combinations; a navy strap and face with a rose gold case; an all-black design with pale hands and markers and a brushed steel case; a black version with colourful blue, red and yellow markings; and a navy and brushed steel design.

All of the variations feature a domed mineral-glass cover, which protects three dials for measuring 24 hours, 30 minutes and 60 seconds. The face also incorporates a date window. These features are controlled using the crown and two additional buttons on the right side of the 40-millimetre case.

The unisex S75 has a flat mineral-glass cover over its 34-millimetre case, and has two rings of markings on the face – an outer row of thin lines indicates the minutes while an inner band of thicker lines is used for the hours.

Two versions have black markings – a tan coloured strap is matched with a white face in a brushed steel case, while a green strap is accompanied by a brushed steel face and case. Both have red second hands.

A version with a blue strap has a brushed steel face and case along with matching markings, and a blue second hand. The final combination features a rose gold case with matching markings, and the hour and minute hands in the same finish, along with a dark metal face and a brown strap.

The smaller C50 has a 28-millimetre case with a domed mineral-glass cover, and a calfskin strap. There are three versions with a rose gold case – two of these also have brushed rose gold faces, while the other has a brushed steel face. Straps come in pink, olive, navy and tan.
