Barclay & Crousse's award-winning Edificio E captured in movie by Cristobal Palma

Architectural photographer Cristobal Palma has created a film showing Peruvian firm Barclay & Crousse's concrete university building in Piura, which was awarded the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize 2018.

Edificio E beat five other shortlisted projects to win the biennial prize, and was praised by the jury for its "deceptive simplicity and modesty", as well as how it responds to the arid rural setting.

Designed for the University of Piura campus, the square building contains lecture halls, classrooms, group study rooms, faculty and administrative offices, and a cafeteria and reception hall. These are all connected by outdoor circulation spaces that form a labyrinth of crevices between the concrete walls.

Palma's movie shows how students and faculty use these areas for working and socialising, similar to the photographs he took of the project when it completed earlier this year.

The Chilean photographer has documented several of Barclay & Crousse's buildings, including a clifftop villa on the outskirts of Lima and an archaeology museum in the Peruvian desert, and has also created a collection of short films about architecture across South America and beyond.
