Bernhardt-Vella creates mismatched geometries in Nouveau bathroom collection for Ex.T

Round and square elements can be mixed and matched in this range of bathroom furniture, created by design studio Bernhardt-Vella for Italian brand Ex.T.

Debuting at the Maison&Objet homeware fair in Paris, Nouveau is a collection of basins, wall-mounted cabinets and mirrors that can be combined to create a variety of geometric compositions.

Milanese designers Paola Vella and Ellen Bernhardt designed some elements to be completely rectangular, while others incorporate whole or partial circles. This means they can be put together in both symmetric and asymmetric arrangements.

Ex.T described the collection as "born from a balance of basic and classic shapes such as circles, semi-circles and parallelepipeds, creating a game of volumes in a succession of full and empty spaces".

"Freely inspired by early-20th-century art deco, the collection takes refined suggestions from that era and reworks them with the taste and sensitivity of a contemporary perspective," it said.

The design centres around a basin that is rectilinear, save for one rounded corner. It comes in both rectangular and square proportions, with an edge detail that can used as a surface, or as a mount for taps.

The sink can be wall-mounted or placed atop a surface. Cabinets and drawers can be placed below, along with metal frameworks that offer an accent of black, gold or silver.

The range of accompanying mirrors includes one with both straight edges and rounded corners.

This mirror can be positioned upright or sideways, depending on what is more suitable. It is dissected by a folded piece of metal that functions as a shelf in either arrangement.

The basins come in white and a new pink shade called Rosa Cipria. It can be paired with surfaces in marble or stone, different types of wooden drawers, and metal elements in brushed bronze, satin-finish brass or matt black finishes.

Other options include towel rails and various types of taps.

Ex.T is a contemporary bathroom brand based in Florence.

As well as launching the new collection by Bernhardt-Vella at Maison&Objet, the brand has also added two new products to existing collections.

German designer Sebastian Herkner has added a square basin to his Ribbon range launched in Milan last year, while Norm Architects has designed an armchair to join its Rest range of bathroom seating.

Dezeen is media partner for the January 2019 edition of Maison&Objet, which ends today.
