Atelier 56S has created a light-filled extension for a headquarters office space in rural Brittany, France.
The project is an extension of the existing building, connected by a glass walkway and designed to provide a large floor area while preserving a maximum amount of free land. This allows the creation of a planted space between the existing and the new building.
Designed to evolve over time, the freestanding tray structure on the south side of the plot is set on a constructive framework of wooden posts and beams to allow for south-facing offices that benefit from the open views and light. The pre-aged wood sunshades and cladding shift according to the orientation of the sun, and are offset by a triple-glazed curtain wall which reflects the setting during the day and reveals the wooden floors in the evening.
