Perkins and Will has created a medical centre in San Diego where collaborative spaces provide room for research and development.
The project in San Diego is a space designed to create synergies between academic and private researchers to become a research hub and the first academic-industry incubator site, thereby speeding up the delivery of life-saving cancer treatments.
To achieve this, our team had to rethink the traditional laboratory design to create a more collaborative and engaging environment. This collaborative-focused design begins with the atrium – serving as the project's living room for researchers – where they meet, experiment, and share ideas.
Inspired by landmarks such as the San Diego's Salk Institute – this building was designed in white architectural concrete frames with infilled glazing and connected via mass timber.
This project has been longlisted in the business building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
