META architectuurbureau and van Bergen Kolpa Architecten have created a giant rooftop greenhouse in the Belgian city of Roeselare.
This project meets the urgent need to use space as sustainably, efficiently and economically as possible within the growing trend for urban agriculture as a way of activating residual space in the city.
In Agrotopia, two previously independent worlds – architecture and agriculture – are united.
With its faceted glass frontages, monumental entrance staircase and stacked functions, the giant greenhouse sits on the roof of an auction shed, giving a striking architectural face to horticulture on the city’s rooftops.
The integration of the framework with the concrete substructure and complex installations has resulted in a proud transparent sculpture of steel and glass which underscores both its agricultural and its public function.
