VeloMed
by Gwen Gage

VeloMed is a lightweight tool for transporting boxes of medication that is easily included in existing malaria medication shipments.

When a healthcare volunteer arrives at a clinic to retrieve medication, the VeloMed strip can be cut to the desired length, filled with boxes and secured to the worker’s back or bike with a small cord. The coiling of the VeloMed strip holds boxes in a compact unit, preventing them from slipping out on a rough road. Once it arrives to the village, the strip serves as an organizational tool. Hung on the wall it is a visual record of how much medication is in stock. The thin plastic strip is made of 14 mil low density polyethylene (LDPE) and die cut to create openings for the boxes. This material was chosen because it was flexible enough to easily stretch over a box but tight enough to securely hold it in place. After many iterations I decided on the dog-bone shape that grips the box’s corners with tabs that prevent it from falling out.
