The Master of Science (MS) in Design and Urban Ecologies is a two-year, full-time graduate program in which students engage with global cities – including New York City, the setting of our campus – as living laboratories for developing innovative, justice-centred design strategies aimed at urban challenges and transformation.

As a master's student, you are guided by award-winning faculty and experienced urban practitioners and have unique opportunities to co-create with civic and local partners. Graduates emerge as forward-thinking designers ready to work in both public and private sectors. In line with The New School's commitment to environmental and social justice, you combine theory and practice in innovation-driven projects that address phenomena such as globalisation, deindustrialisation, migration, climate change and shifting urban policies.

Our interdisciplinary program attracts diverse students from a range of fields including the humanities, social sciences, law, architecture, communication design, environmental studies and activism. Throughout your studies, you gain an in-depth understanding of the forces that influence the processes of urban decline, restructuring and development, using your newfound skills to tackle challenges head-on and contribute to the creation of more resilient, equitable and ecologically responsible cities. Merit scholarships are available as part of the application process; no separate application is required.
