RAK Gateway by OMA

Five years ago...

It was a busy time for architects OMA this week five years ago, as they released designs for major projects that included a large urban development in the United Arab Emirates (above) and a 300-metre skyscraper in Mexico City (below).

Another proposal was for an airport for Saudi Arabia (below), designed to cater for the two million pilgrims who make the journey to Mecca during the holy Hajj period.

In Kuwait City, the architects were working on a masterplan for a major mixed-use development (below), centred around the pedestrian rather than the car.

Meanwhile over in Dubai, they were working alongside Porsche Design on plans for a pair of towers, one cylindrical and one a hollow slab (below), as well as a concept for a rotating skyscraper (bottom).

Unfortunately none of these projects have yet made it off the drawing board.
