Milan 2014: Italian brand Gaber will launch a bicycle basket-influenced chair by Italian designer Alessandro Busana at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile today.
Alessandro Busana's reference for his Basket Chair for Gaber came from the traditional woven containers that attach onto the front of bikes.
"I saw a baby in a rattan basket fixed on a bicycle handlebar and I started to think about how a basket could be considered as a container for people," he said.
"I researched basket construction and I saw that in the beginning there's a minimal structure that inspired me to create that kind of rhythm, between the full and empty parts, in the shell of the seat."
The plastic section that forms the seat, back and arms is broken up vertical holes around the sides, and comes in six colours.
Legs in wood, plastic or metal fix to the chassis on the bottom and optional upholstery can be added.
The wooden legs create a contrast of materials, plastic legs allow the chair to be used outdoors and metal legs make it stackable.
"Creating a nice chair in a single version and that's not stackable is easy, but creating a nice chair that's adaptable to many situations and stackable is a great challenge," Busana said.
Gaber will be showing the Basket Chair at Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Hall 12 Stand E07, in Milan from 8 to 13 April.
