Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola has used expanded metal mesh to create the furniture in this collection for Spanish brand Kettal (+ slideshow).
Patricia Urquiola has paired industrial and natural materials to create the sofa, table and chair in her Mesh collection.
"The Kettal Mesh collection recalls architectural facades, which filter the surrounding environment without stopping the light and air flow," said a statement from Kettal.
The sofa features aluminium mesh back and arms, which bend outward slightly to create angled rests for the side cushions.
Three planes of solid wood – each with rounded edges – create the base, supporting the two large upholstered seat cushions.
A pair of mesh sections curve around opposite corners of the table, which has two horizontal surfaces for placing items.
Slits are cut into the materials and stretched by a machine to create the expanded mesh, forming a pattern of holes across the surface.
Urquiola has also designed a series of sofas for Moroso, including one upholstered in jersey fabric and another that features exaggerated seams.
