Structural trusses influence Bridge furniture by Variant Studio

The geometric patterns of bridge structures informed the shapes used to create this wooden furniture by Variant Studio (+ slideshow).

Influenced by long-spanning structures, Variant Studio has scaled down the shapes and replaced metal with birch to form the Bridge collection.

"The project Bridge is inspired from the construction of the iconic bridges around the world," said the studio. "Bridge represents the link between the start and destination, a symbolic conjunction of two worlds, but most importantly it is a transition to the new one."

The range features a long bench or sofa, an armchair and a footstool, each made from lengths of birch wood with square sections.

Backs and seats of the furniture items comprise crossed beams within square frames, while triangular shapes are created by the elements that form the legs.

"The furniture accents the rhythm of the shadow it casts, therefore it becomes more dynamic and in a way visually it's constantly changing," said Variant Studio.

The bench is built from modular sections, allowing its length to be extended. Corner pieces can be added to turn the design into L- and U-shaped seats.

One end section is built to form a raised point, while the other side has a sloping armrest. Locks incorporated into the legs are used to join the modules together.

The lounge chair and footstool are constructed as single pieces, joined with pegs and glue rather than screws.

Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, the furniture is available oiled or in a range of colour finishes.
