Helsinki designer Joanna Laajisto has devised a modular collection of storage units for Finnish furniture company Lundia with compartments that come in three different sizes (+ slideshow).
Joanna Laajisto took inspiration from the ISO 216 paper system – where each size is achieved by dividing its predecessor in half parallel to its shortest side – to create the System set of drawers.
"I wanted to do something very simple, honest and rigid that would suit Lundia's style," Laajisto told Dezeen. "I wanted to do a range of different sizes and it was important to me that they all click together seamlessly. The standard paper sizes work just like that."
The handmade boxes, which are slightly smaller than A3, A4 and A5 in plan, are made from glue-laminated solid pine joined with wooden pin connections.
The lids slide into slots in the walls, with a hole in the surface to hook in a finger for opening and closing. They are available in three colours - mint green, soft grey and dark blue.
Due to the sizing system, the boxes stack neatly on top of each other in different configurations.
"The colours brighten up the wooden shelf, but the interior is always natural pine, just like the Lundia Classic and you can create interesting patterns by piling up different sizes and colours," said Laajisto.
The range was launched at last week's Habitare Furniture Fair in Helsinki, which took place as part of Helsinki Design Week.
