Archtober returns to New York City for fifth year

Dezeen promotion: architecture and design festival Archtober returns to New York City this month, with more than 200 events taking place across the five boroughs (+ slideshow).

Now in its fifth year, the event has brought together over 60 partner organisations from across the city to explore the impact of urban planning, architecture and interior design on New York.

A wide selection of events, panels and exhibitions will take place throughout October, including the Building of the Day series where architects lead lunchtime tours of historic landmarks and recently completed projects.

Visitors can explore TEN Arquitecto's Mercedes House, Thread Collective's NYCHA Red Hook West Urban Farm, Steven Holl Architects' Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, and Slade Architecture's Staten Island Zoo Carousel Enclosure.

Other attractions include the Architecture & Design Film Festival at the Chelsea Bow Tie Cinemas, and a panel discussion with the 2015 National Design Award winners at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

New for this year is the Center for Architecture's Archtober Hall – a temporary pop-up location at Manhattan's South Street Seaport.

The site will be used throughout Archtober to host lectures by partner organisations, and will also become home to the Guggenheim Museum's Åzone Terminal exhibition.

Entrance to the Center for Architecture's Archtober Lounge, South Street Seaport's Archtober Hall and exhibitions are free and open to the public. Other program and exhibition entrance costs may vary.

Archtober is finally here

New York City's month-long architecture and design festival is back again and bigger than ever. Now in its fifth year, Archtober will bring together more than 60 partner organisations from across the five boroughs to explore architecture and design in the city. In 2015, Archtober celebrates five years, five boroughs.

Curated for the design-savvy and novices alike, the festival offers more than 200 events, panels, site tours, and exhibitions that explore the impact of urban planning, architecture, and interior design on the quintessential design city, New York.

CUNY Advanced Science and Research Center by KPF

New this year is the Center for Architecture's Archtober Hall, located at 181 Front Street in Manhattan's South Street Seaport. This temporary pop-up location, presented as part of the Seaport Culture District, currently hosts the Center's exhibition, Sea Level: Five Boroughs at Water's Edge, which presents a water's eye view of New York City, spanning 25 miles from Fort Totten to Fort Wadsworth along the East River.

The site will be used throughout Archtober to host lectures by partner organisations, including the Nordic Consulates, the Van Alen Institute, and Enterprise Community Partners. Starting on October 23, Archtober Hall will also be home to the Guggenheim Museumís Åzone Terminal exhibition.

Archtober's famous Building of the Day series returns again this year, offering lunchtime architect-led tours of NYC sites, from historic landmarks to recently completed projects. Each day of Archtober opens to the doors to a different site in the city. This week's tours include TEN Arquitecto's Mercedes House, thread collective's NYCHA Red Hook West Urban Farm, Steven Holl Architects' Editions de Parfums FrÈdÈric Malle, and Slade Architecture's Staten Island Zoo Carousel Enclosure.

The Architecture & Design Film Festival at Chelsea Bow Tie Cinemas: the largest such film festival in the nation, showcasing more than 25 films; Lego events for all ages; a luxury yacht tour by Classic Harbour Line of Staten Island's Kill Van Kull and Freshkills Park waterways; the Brooklyn Historical Society's "This Is Brooklyn" museum tour and a panel discussion with the 2015 National Design Award winners at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
