Traces of Quiet Devotion – Spiritual Imagery in Yangzhou Woodcut Art explores the 1,300-year-old craft of woodblock printing.

The craft – which sees letters and images carved into wooden or copper blocks, and used to press ink onto paper – is historically rooted in Yangzhou, China, with the city chosen as the royal printing centre during the Qing dynasty.

On display during London Design Festival 2025, the exhibition showcases both the carving blocks and the prints they are used to create, including Buddhist scriptures, books and illustrations.

All pieces in the exhibition are from Yangzhou, with some of the works created by crafter Shen Shuhua and his apprentice Peng Lei.

Traces of Quiet Devotion – Spiritual Imagery in Yangzhou Woodcut Art takes place from 13 to 21 September 2025 at 32 Connaught Street, St George's Fields, London W2 2AF, UK.
