Furniture and Product Design BA (Hons) at Nottingham Trent University

The Furniture and Product Design BA (Hons) course at Nottingham Trent University provides conceptual and design skills for domestic and contract furniture markets.

School: School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment, Nottingham Trent University
Course: Furniture and Product Design BA (Hons)
Location: Nottingham, UK
Course dates: September 2023 to June 2027 (including sandwich placement year)
Application deadline: 25 January 2023

BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design at NTU focuses on creating innovative items for domestic and contract markets, from furniture, decorative products, lighting, and homewares, to interior products and consumer goods.

Design through making is a key theme of the course. Your project work will vary from the commercial to the more conceptual, considering the historical and social contexts in which projects sit, as well as contemporary trends in practice.

Our creative studio environment will support you in developing your own individual style, vision, and philosophy. You'll develop a hands-on empirical approach through drawing, model-making, CAD, testing, and prototyping.

We don't have a 'house' design style at NTU; rather, we'll be taking you through the different methodologies and helping you to build up a toolbox of approaches.

From introductory activities to live projects and industry-set briefs, you'll experiment with materials, manufacturing techniques and processes in our prototyping workshops, CAD suites, 3D printing rooms and wood, metal, and concrete labs.

A flexible and intuitive designer is a great designer: our goal is to instil that kind of versatility in you and to ensure you graduate knowing what approach to use, when, and where.

Accredited by the Chartered Society of Designers (CSD).
