Master Design and New Environments at Iceland University of the Arts

The Master Design and New Environments course at Iceland University of the Arts provides students with workshops and seminars on design and science, with a focus on climate and food systems.

School: Iceland University of the Arts
Course: Master Design and New Environments
Location: Reykjavík, Iceland
Course dates: August 2023 to June 2025
Application deadline: 12 April 2023

The entanglement of nature and technology has led to environmental and societal challenges. Design practice can bridge interdisciplinary knowledge to instigate change and transform obsolete systems.

The core motivation for this new MA program is to contribute to redefining the design disciplines and to educate future designers to navigate these new environments.

The focus for students enrolled on the 2023/25 programme is on climate and food systems.

This theme will be explored in collaboration with scientists from the University of Iceland, practitioners, and partners from the industry in parallel with workshops in the design and media studios at Iceland University of the Arts.

The first year of study begins with field research, seminars on design and science, and students undertaking site-specific case studies.

In the spring semester of year one, students will participate in a creative residency with one of our partners in Iceland.

We have established a unique network of stakeholders driving innovation in the environmental sphere. In 2023 to 2024, we partner with interactive design studio Gagarin, seaweed farming company Eldey Aqua, food research centre Matis and Brim Innovation, amongst others.

In the second year, students will complete their final projects and thesis.

For the MA project, students will choose one of two tracks – the practice-based track focusing on the implementation of a professional design project, or the theory-based track with an MA thesis and an individual publication.

Applications to this course have now closed.
