Japanese designers Nendo have designed an exhibition of craft objects at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan.

The exhibition forms a preview of the Kanazawa World Craft Triennale 2010.

Each of the 62 objects on show is presented inside a small, mass-produced domestic greenhouse.

Arranged in a grid, the units were already equipped with shelves and wiring for lighting.

Once the exhibition closes, they will be collapsed easily then stored or reused.

The exhibition will remain in place until 25 October.

Exhibition design at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

We designed the exhibition space of "Kanazawa World Craft Triennial 2010 Pre-event" exhibition at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa in Japan. The design for a exhibition of 62 craft objects by 50 artisans at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, in western Japan.

The objects' materials range widely, including glass, wood, ceramics, metal and cloth. A variety of techniques were used in their creation, and they range widely in size. For the exhibition design, then, we chose the opposite strategy. Small mass-produced home-use greenhouses give a sense of order to the space and provide visitors with a flat perspective from which to view the exhibition, allowing the rich variety of the objects to stand out.

The greenhouses also suggest the metaphor of the museum's hopes that crafts will continue to grow and flourish like plants. The greenhouses are made completely of glass, and each comes with its own shelving and pre-installed wiring for lighting. They are inexpensive, perfect for small budgets, and are easily assembled with only a screwdriver. It took only one day to assemble all 62 of the boxes.

They can be broken down and stored after the exhibition. This not only eliminates nearly all waste from the exhibition fixtures, but also allows for possible reuse during the the Kanazawa World Craft Triennale 2010.

Here come the men in black

Nice pictures but one question : where are the electrical wires ?
Option 1 : photoshoppely removed from all the pictures => fake
Option 2 : plugs located under each “greenhouse” =>many plugs => tailor-made technical floor => kind of antinomic with the inexpensive ambition and the re-use / re-install intention
Option 3 : batteries included in each structure =>somehow inadequate solution given the number of lights (apparently 3 per greenhouse)
    Option 4 : ?

    Echoing mbd:
    Where are the wires?

Otherwise this is an amazing layout, visually. Repurposing the greenhouses was a great idea.

maybe the lowest parti is a glass bloc, which includes all the wires? just the pictures are too deceptive.
