This former electricity power station for the Shoreditch tram system, will host a spectacular design installation “The Dwelling Lab” by Patricia Urquiola and Giulio Ridolfo featuring the new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. Blending their creative and technological expertise, the German carmaker and the Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat have collaborated to create a unique sculpture, based on an innovative car concept. Urquiola and Ridolfo have created a design whose most daring elements – huge cone-like structures that seem to be growing out of the car’s body – draw the viewer inward just as they reveal the usually sealed-off interior to the outside gaze.

In the main hall, Canadian manufacturer Bocci, best known for their beautiful chandelier installations, will showcase their latest designs. The Series 28 is made using a special glass-blowing technique, where air is repeatedly blown in and then sucked out of intermittently heated and cooled glass. The Series 21 uses thin-wall raw porcelain and blown borosilicate glass, and the Series 14 chandelier is a family of low-voltage pendant lighting products. All are designed to be clustered in groups and feature varying imperfections and bubbles that ensure each casts a unique light.

Dezeenwatchstore.com, the first retail venture from internationally acclaimed online design and architecture magazine Dezeen will debut its inaugural collection. Specialising in unique, designer watches, the launch range features collections from global talents including internationally renowned British designers Michael Young and Jasper Morrison, super-cool Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa, and pieces from boutique brands such as Hong Kong’s VOID and London’s cult watchmaker Mr Jones.

Another Country, an exciting new contemporary furniture brand will launch at the Tramshed with a debut collection of nine pieces. Its designs are archetypal, calling on the familiar and unpretentious forms of British Country kitchen style, allied to traditional Scandinavian and Japanese woodwork. This first collection, with recognisable forms of craft furniture are pared back to their most basic elements and made using the most efficient workshop techniques and the best quality wood.

Continuity across the exhibition space will be provided by revolutionary Swedish floor company Bolon who will showcase their unique woven-vinyl flooring through- out, cleverly integrating the design and colour into the scheme of the exhibition.

The Tramshed will play host to the official UK launch of RVW, founded by Johannes Herbertsson and Jonas Nordgren in 2009. Located in the city of Malmö in the south of Sweden, RVW draws on the knowledge, talent and skills of this region to create authentic timeless designs. The installation will include delicate accessories such as the Haijk flowerpot  - a glazed pot in a pine base - to striking furniture pieces like Mollis - a visually impressive yet simple, lightweight, low-slung easy chair.

The latest furniture, lighting and interior product experiments from design duo Scott, Rich & Victoria, will also be shown at Tramshed. Scott Fitzsimons and Richard Hartle both studied at the School of Design, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Their international inter-disciplinary studio launched in 2009, and now works from opposite ends of the international time zones in three workspaces; London, Auckland and cyberspace.

The Twig range includes a bench, tables and chairs rendered in light oak. Their design evokes the complex intertwining of branches, while the Edward series of benches, arm- chairs and stools are a contemporary re-interpretation of Edwardian seating.

Benchmark, the design-led manufacturer of bespoke furniture, will transport their Kintbury workshops to the Tramshed, where skilful craftsmen will make a range of furniture from domestic pieces to commercial projects, demonstrating their specialist skills in both wood and metal-working. In celebration of the event, Benchmark will produce a limited edition London Design Festival piece, to be given away to one lucky visitor each day. Visitors can also enjoy a drink from the ‘work in progress’ bar while they watch the craftsmen at work.

The Tramshed Live!

A challenging, inspirational, entertaining and thought-provoking programme of presentations, discussions and events at The Tramshed designed to stimulate debate – and action – under the overall theme of ‘New Direc- tions for Design’. We are still engaging panellists and contributors, and times may change – visit the website for regular updates.

Wednesday 22 September, 6pm

‘Can design make us more human?’

Ilse Crawford and a panel of design practitioners – plus at least one contribution from a distinguished speaker who is completely outside the discipline - explore what it means to ‘design with humanity’, or make ‘human- centred design’. Cities, places and products shape human behaviour. Designers and architects can create bet- ter places to live by focusing, right from the start, on the people who inhabit them, and addressing their needs - emotional and social as well as practical. The session provides a keynote starting point for the discussions throughout the week; we all know that design needs to re-think its priorities, but what does the new order look like?

‘Augmented reality’ and the future of online retail

Shopping online has its advantages – speed and convenience – but it offers nothing to compare with the ‘flesh and blood’ experience of ‘real life’ shopping, which is crammed with the social and sensuous elements that make it (arguably) distinct, memorable and (sometimes) satisfying. We embark on a journey, with two re- nowned retail specialists and a state of the art technologist, through the possibilities that digital technology can offer to make online retail as real as it can be.

Luxury, necessity, sustainability – and a very unusual car

The Tramshed Live is delighted to welcome the people that made the BMW / Kvadrat ‘Dwelling Lab’ installa- tion, first seen in Milan this year, happen. Innovative thinkers such as BMW’s Group Design Director Adriaan van Hooydonk, Milan-based designer Patricia Urquiola and colour and textile specialist Giulio Ridolfo have cre- ated a piece which is almost impossible to define in anything other than its own terms, but which, you may be sure, begs a myriad of questions. About the nature of personal transport, the social future of the automobile, the humanity of an automotive interior, the divide between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’, and the implications for a sustainable future. This is one definitely not to miss.

Redesigning design, remaking making

Well, maybe it isn’t all made in China any more. Or soon won’t be. A powerful international group of design- ers, manufacturers and the creative director of Britain’s best known design-led retailer introduce and explore the new context in which things are designed and made. The possibilities of rapid manufacturing, consumer engagement in the process, the significance of craft and the designer’s perennial quest for control of a process he or she may not well understand are all thrown wide open.

Colour magic

How do people decide what will be the favourite colours for the next season, or the season after that? In a world where design pays a good deal more than lip service to fashion, it pays to unwrap the power and pull of colour in interiors and materials, and to match it with the mystery of the ‘touchy feely’ in texture and how and why we humans respond in the way we do. Plus some fascinating insights into the materials technologies that can make colour without pigment.

The Tramshed Bicycle Extravaganza

A disparate but humorous collection of individuals who are passionate about bicycles contribute to the Tram- shed Live’s Grand Finale, at which, to steal the time honoured Murray Walker’s time honoured cliché, anything can happen – and probably will. The time is right for the bicycle to achieve greater social significance than ever before; it ticks all the environmental, fitness, urban design and wellbeing boxes; it is a design that can- not be improved upon. Or can it? We have bicycle designers, designers with and without bicycles, a designer creating bicycles out of wood for a famous furniture manufacturer, even an engineering innovation that will revolutionise downhill mountain biking. Bring your own bike and be prepared to be amazed!
