designjunction announces exhibitor line-up: an international showcase of world renowned designers and brands

Open daily 10am-7pm | Free to attend

designjunction is set to be the premier destination at this year’s London Design Festival with a powerful line-up of world renowned brands and creative enterprises housed in London’s largest non-purpose built event space. This year designjunction welcomes the Tramshed into the event to create an even more spectacular showcase for design and culture.

Set within the impressive surrounds of a 1960s Sorting Office, the venue offers a spectacular industrial backdrop to showcase the best in global design. Moving away from the traditional trade show environment, the Sorting Office will strike the perfect balance between creative and commercial, offering visitors a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere in which to engage and connect with design.

Three floors, across an impressive 120,000 sq ft. space, will be devoted to leading international brands, smaller cutting-edge labels, pop-up shops, large-scale installations, temporary restaurants, bars and cafes, working flash factories, live entertainment, a leading seminar programme and much more.

Top international brands take centre stage

designjunction will feature more than 100 world-class international brands. New product launches, new furniture and lighting brands plus creative installations will be presented at this spectacular central London venue.

Live Flash Factories

designjunction will transform part of the Sorting Office’s ground floor into a series of interactive Flash Factories, where the processes of industrial production will be brought to life, courtesy of some of the world’s leading design manufacturers.

A key highlight will be furniture pioneers Thonet demonstrating their mobile wood-bending machine, used to craft the classic 214 chair. Every hour, on the hour, visitors will be able to witness this pioneering manufacturing technique, dating back to the 1850s, as two highly skilled Thonet craftsmen demonstrate how the backrest of this iconic cafe chair is perfected. No other chair has ever been reproduced as many times as the 214 (over 60 million and counting) which makes this manufacturing master-class all the more special. Other leading brands will reveal their unique production skills.

Events

The Tramshed - one of the most exciting events at the London Design Festival in 2010 and 2011, returns this year to a new location within designjunction. The Tramshed will present a diverse and carefully curated selection of work from vibrant companies, both established and emerging. This will include work from design-led brands working in collaboration with De La Espada including Autoban, Matthew Hilton, Leif.designpark , Studioilse, Charlene Mullen, Benjamin Hubert, Soren Rose Studio.

Midcentury Modern - experts in curating vintage design classics and modern collectables will transport a smaller version of their celebrated show to designjunction, presenting 20 top mid-century dealers alongside young designers and up-cyclers on the ground floor. Enjoy a wealth of design classics from Wegner, Eames, Jacobsen, Nelson as well as contemporary homeware from the best in British, all available to buy directly from the show on the day.

Entertainment

designjunction will host a full programme of seminars and talks, designed to challenge, provoke and engage with 21st Century design. Art and design collective The Decorators will transform an area of the show into a hand-built cinema structure to host talks and film screenings. The project entitled ‘Architecture to watch films by’ will look at the relationship between film and architecture, its design will be influenced by the film content screened on the inside walls. The cinema will be presented as a cinematic building, creating a moment of transition into the world of film. All seminars and screenings are free to attend.

Meanwhile, PechaKucha night - the fast paced presentation format - will feature a stellar line-up of international speakers on Friday 21 September. designjunction will be the London Design Festival’s late night destination of choice with live DJs and an irrepressible party atmosphere for one night only.

Pop-up Eateries

Experience the very best in British gastronomy and design as multi award-winning Canteen restaurant and Transport for London (TfL) combine to create a unique dining experience, open to the public for lunches. Canteen, which has a number of permanent sites across London, draws heavily on TfL's utilitarian chic for its interiors and is a natural fit for this site-specific concept. The interior space will be designed by designjunction’s creative director Michael Sodeau with furniture produced by British manufacturers Modus. The project will reference London Transport's old canteens, which in their heyday served 100,000 meals every day.

Gelupo, best known for its refined gelato, will reveal their award-winning tastes with a temporary pop-up ice cream parlour, serving a unique recipe exclusively produced for the event. Gelupo will also be operating a bar and cafÑ at the show, bringing their expert blend of gelato to designjunction.

Artek will present their 2nd Cycle concept where vintage Artek stools are given a new lease of life. The stools will form part of Artek’s cafÑ where diners can actually buy the furniture they sit on. The 2nd collection is made up of old Aalto chairs found in flea markets and schools. The idea was born out of Artek wanting to raise the issue of conscious consuming, praise authentic design and honour the importance of originality. To date, an impressive 8 million stools have been sold world-wide

Retail Therapy

designjunction will have a dedicated retail area for high-end pop-up shops selling everything from fashion to fine jewellery, watches to ceramics, books to lighting and much, much more. designjunction will be an exciting retail destination for customers looking for an eclectic mix of design products. The pop-up stores will include: Native Union, Dezeen Watch Store, Anything Stationery, and FAO.

designjunction embodies what design is all about: creativity and the living environment. It will also be the ideal place to work, do business and relax during the London Design Festival.

As the largest destination for design, culture and entertainment, it is simply not to be missed so make a note in your diaries now.
