Competition: win a book documenting America's mid-century architecture

Dezeen has partnered with Taschen to give readers the chance to win a copy of Modernism Rediscovered, which features images of buildings from the USA's mid-century modern movement taken by late photographer Julius Shulman.

Congratulations to the winner! Steve Boyer from the USA.

Comprising three volumes and a slipcase, the new release documents a lifetime of images by Schulman, a prolific 20th-century architectural photographer.

"The photography of Julius Shulman transported a West Coast dream around the world," states Taschen.

"His images of mid-century, Southern Californian architecture captured not only the distinctive structural, functional and design elements of a building but also the context of its surroundings and inhabitants in a holistic, evocative sense of lifestyle."

Featuring over 400 photographs, Modernism Rediscovered explores the photographer's Californian beginnings, as well as his forays into international modernism.

Shulman built up relationships with a number of modernist architects – particularly California's Richard Neutra, John Lautner, R M Schindler and Gregory Ain.

His photos of their projects present both architectural features and the lives of their inhabitants.

These pictures helped to shape the image of the Southern Californian lifestyle during the 1950s and 1960s, which spread to the rest of the country and the world.

"Over time, Shulman's talents would take him around the world, steadily crafting one of the most compelling chronologies of modern architecture," explains the publisher.

The selected images within the books have been narrowed down from an initial collection of over 260,000 photographs.
