Dezeen Showroom: block shapes contrasted with soft textures define a new rug collection created for Sydney-based studio DesignByThem by designer Danielah Martinez.
Overlay Rugs from DesignByThem is a collection of floor coverings featuring vibrant colours and geometric forms.
"The focus on colour for this collection is intentionally bold and arranged by a comparatively minimalist set of 'components' that flow across a series of geometric shapes," said Martinez.
"This design is inspired by the textures and colours that result from overlaying sheets of transparent material, then working to achieve this effect through the careful blending of colour, which I find the most intriguing and emotive skill to master in rug design."
The collection includes five different styles ranging from neutral tones to bright yellows, reds and blues.
Made from handtufted New Zealand wool, the rugs are soft and durable, as well as hypoallergenic and water-repellant.
In addition to being a multidisciplinary designer specialising in textiles and ceramics, Martinez is an associate lecturer in industrial design at the University of New South Wales.
